I was just curious if anyone who had stock "over the shoulder" belts either replaced the plastic case over the reel, or just went with a lap belt.
My driver side plastic cover has a crack in it, and I don't know where to find one.
Or is removing the over the shoulder belt illegal?
Check your state laws regarding seat belt requirements. Your state law might require a shoulder belt in vehicles of certian year models or require factory equipment to remain. Also, if you plan on wearing it you would be much better off with the shoulder belt. A lap belt alone will firmly plant your head / face into the steering wheel / dash if you have a crash.
Mine is supposed to have shoulders but it has laps now. It was like that when I bought it and if I get pulled over for it thats exactly what im gonna say. Im not sure of the law out here for that but most of the cops here wont pull ya over for stuff like that anyways cause they want to get back to there coffe and doughnuts.
Shoulder belts were optional from at least as far back as 1970 to 1975.
Standard in 1976.
It's also against Federal Law, not just state law to tamper, degrade or to remove any safety device or equipment from motor vehicles that fall under the FMVSS (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards).
This includes side marker lamps, Seatbelts, Seatbelt Warning Lamps and Buzzers, brakes, bumpers, even the heater and gauges.
How strictly it's inforced depends on the state.
California for instance is very strict on certain things, including seatbelts. More lax on others.
There are states that also require safety inspections.
Not a good idea to remove, degrade, or hinder safety equipment, IMO.
The rollpan thing im not sure about. But you could always go down to the local pick and pull and get what you need for you belts. The actual belt themselves can be bought from vendors here or somewhere like LMC. Personally, i have seatbelts from a chevy pickup that reel at the top and bottom and have a fixed clip. I think theyre nicer. Now i just have to get around to puttin em in.
