TW Chip Q?

Right now my '96 has stock injectors and it will be a while before I can get II's and the supporting mods to go with them. I got my Banks stuff before I knew about this site but oh well. The truck runs great now and puts out 274HP and 548TQ to the wheels with its current mods. I can really tell the difference in towing, power and smoke between having the Power Pack chip in and out. I talked to Tony about 6 months ago and he said there would be a noticeable difference in Extreme and Race positions but he really couldn't say how much. Is it worth it to get the TW chip now for what might only be small gains and reburn later when I get the II's, or just wait and save the $400 or so a 4 pos TW chip would cost? Would the difference in the two chips be substantial? I can afford the chip now, but not II's and supporting mods. How much would a Banks Power Pack chip sell for?

Thanks for any input.

When I got my chip I had Tony burn it for stage II's. It ran fine with stock sticks. In the extreme position it would start running out of fuel if I stomped it really hard. I would recommend you do as I did. I ran mine in the street race position with no problems. Like I said the Extreme will run good also but the sticks start running out of fuel because they are open so long.

Thanks Neal. I've been thinking about that. It could be a year before I'm able to get II's but if a chip will make that much difference I might as well go for it. Would Stock, Tow, Street Race and Extreme be good choices for a 4 position TW? How much more power can you get out of stock sticks? I'm thinking I'm pretty close to the ragged edge on that. I know those dyno nos are pretty accurate.

By the way Neal, what is a feramic clutch?

Either stock or economy plus Tow, Street Race and Extreme are excellent choices. I have 6 pos. but only use a couple. I like the hi idle for camping and unusual situations . If I were you I would get exactly what you listed and have Tony burn it for II's for you if you want.
You will get about 70hp from stock sticks. Not much more than that is possible.

Look here for clutch descriptions:

Me thinks I need to pull a valve cover and verify what kind of sticks are in there. I know my dyno nos are good because some guys that day actually complained that their nos were slightly lower than the last place they dynoed, and some had upgraded since then. So if there were any errors the day I dynoed, it might have been reading low. I suspect the previous dyno they used was off. I'm opening up the old memory banks here, which can be rusty. Before I found this site I let the Stealership work on my truck. They had the VCs off once and I asked the mechanic what kind of injectors were in there and what their condition was. He said I had the "good kind!" - possibly implying they were not stock. I didn't ask him to be any more specific. I don't think the PO (original owner) did anything to the truck but he might have. He mentioned some kind of upgrade he did but being a diesel newb, his comments didn't register. I'll take a look before I order a chip from Tony.

What is the difference from stock, econo, and DD?
I know econo runs better and no smoke but that is all.

Chris, I am not sure you will be able to tell much from the top of the injectors. They will probably be AA or AO. Mine were replaced by a dealer once (before I knew FTE) and when I did the II's there were both AA's and AO's.

That makes sense Neal. I'll still take a look for grins. I'll tell Tony I could have either AAs, AOs, or a combination. I'll also tell him what my current dyno #s are and he should be able to come up with a good burn.

Stock is just stock, Econo is a boost in power but for mileage (probably has lower shift points in the trans (auto), And DD is higher HP but normal shifting. Those are all my guesses. I will find out after Thursday!!

I don't know how it could. It was bought new by the PO at the dealer here in NM. But if they were swapped to something other than stock I'd like to at least try and determine that before I order a chip.

So with a manual tranny what is the difference in econo and DD? These 3 are very similiar to each other.

There is a slight chance you could have a Cali model since you are that close to Cali. The Cali Models in '97 have split shots.

I have no idea. I would guess you are right that for a 5sp they are very close to each other.

People have discussed that with a stock motor you won't get much more than 75HP extra out of a chip. Your dyno numbers put you at somewhere between 75 and 100HP over stock AA numbers. Much as folks bash Banks and I'm sure TW could squeak out a little more, I'd guess you're already maxing yours out pretty well if that 75 extra HP number is true. I'd like to ride in a 5 speed truck with stage 2's to see how much more it has than my 1's, but I don't want to open the big turbo/big oil can of worms like Neal has, I just don't need it or want to spend the money.
