So essentially you just attach a wire to the regulator and then touch the ground with it?

Remove the "Field" wire from the regulator and momentarily touch it to the "Batt" terminal. All you want to see is a small arc.

BTW, I have the shop manual but haven't been able to find this information, does anyone know where in the shop manual it is?

I'll be at the Jefferson swap meet/show on Sunday most likely. Not bringing the truck for obvious reasons...
