I have the same question that was asked in 2006 on this forum but nevr answered.
My 02 Explorer with 165K on it has uneven wear pattern on tire and upper ball joint boot is all torn up so I suspect that the upper ball joint requires replacement. My CD shows that the entire control arm must be replaced while Advance AutoParts shows several replacemnt ball joints available. When looking at the control arm I don't see a snap ring or tack weld holding the ball joint in place. How is this ball joint held in place?
Has anyone just replaced the upper ball joint without replacing the entire control arm ($170 vs $40).
if you buy something like MOOG parts, then the ball joint can be changed out by itself the second time, since you have the aftermarket arm.---- alwlays expect the lower ball joint first. if they ahve been changed out already at 100K, then the uppers might be the problem. you can have it jacked up and checked by someone who knows how.
