possibly a dumb question...but with everything that's fallen apart all at the same time, I can't take a chance on messing up anything else so:
any special do's or don'ts when changing oil/filter on a diesel versus my lil Civic?
and while I'm at it- this'll be my first winter with the truck, and it's already getting cold in the mornings (well, 50s, but that's cold in my opinion). anything else I need to know?
nothing special to the filter, its heavy so i usually poke a hole in the bottom of it and let it drain while i drain the oil pan. then its easy to handle and doesnt make a mess when you unscrew it. fill it up most of the way before putting it back on, it holds 2 qts of oil, you dont want a dry start.
i second filling the filter up most of the way before spinning it on its a large filter and would take a while to fill otherwise and while its filling the engine is not getting oil
x2 on pokin a hole in the bottom...first time I changed the oil not doing that it was a frickin mess.
make sure you have a big enough pan to catch all the oil...I picked up a shallow 30qt container(like tupperware) for 5.00.Can do both the filter and pull the plug at the same time......also works great for dropping the trans pan(if you have an auto)
its a mess without poking a hole in it but i can never find a puch or anything other than a screw driver when im changing the oil and a screw driver just bends the **** outta the filter so i normally just spin the filter off with my catch pan below it and keep some rags right next to me.
The filter is larger than most and a standard filter wrench won't fit. I know they must make them but I've not yet been able to find one. I've been using the old rubber strap method but it's hard to get a good grip up in there.
Winter coming .. check out your block heater. It makes it so much nicer on those cold winter mornings.
Ditto, what they said about poking a hole. If you buy your oil in 5 gallon pails, fill some gallon jugs and fill using them. If you already use gallon jugs, then don't worry about it!
I found a filter wrench with a chain on one side and a catch on the other. It is adjustable. The fixed, skinny side of the wrench fits right in between the oil pan/block and filter.
i have a couple large oil filter wrenches one like powerstrkr discribed and then i also have a larger version of a standard wrench, they both work good but i like the larger standard design wrench better
Where did you all get the larger oil filter wrenches? I've checked a couple auto stores and a few other outlets over the past year with no luck. Maybe it was that blank space in the display counter. No big deal on my side but it sure would be nice to have something that actually fit.
Can do both the filter and pull the plug at the same time......also works great for dropping the trans pan(if you have an auto)
yeah, and apparently i do need to replace that too...doesn't leak per se, but kinda seeps
i picked up a pair of filter pliers at AutoZone last night that (according to the package anyways) are adjustable enough to work for both my Honda and my truck. i'm skeptical but will find out soon as they both need done
oh so finally have paid for and have in my possession everything for the vac pump replacement...just need someone to give me a hand getting it all in and then i can FINALLY drive her again...YAY!!!!
one thing i dont like about the chain style is on some cars the chain is too wide to fit into some of the tight spaces they squeeze filters on some cars. but then again i have about 4-5 differnt size and style oil filter wrenches. my large ones i think i got from running farm and fleet. some other places like tractor supply or anything like that should have them
