That is one mean looking 7.3L! I thought you said the truck looked rough, it looks to be in pretty good shape to me. So what about the reliablity of a high horsepower 7.3L Kris I though that was why you wanted to go with a different engine. If you don't like the Cummins you can always throw a dirtymax in her .
I have watch a few sled pulls mostly by automatics put it in first then got to second. You do have to shift you cannot just stick it in first and wind her out all they way down the track you won't make it far. I have yet to see a truck with a stick do much good at our local pulls but these are lighlty to mildly modified street trucks too.
It is a 6 speed, and it does have a Haisley Street Puller clutch in it. The guy before me has pulled about a dozen times, said he does it in 3rd-lo, leave at 4000rpm and it goes down the track around 3200 or so. I plan on pulling the engine, and redoing the pistons to 15:1, as it is somewhere around 13:1 now and sucks for the street, not having glow plugs dont help either. I am going to put a set in this week and see if it will start on it's own. If not i will have to pull the engine out and tear it down, put pistons in it, fill the block, and do a set of headers. Swamps machined the bowls of the pistons, however they did a very crappy job of it, by machining a ring down into the smooth part of the bottom-most area of the bowl, not smooth and im sure it really messes up the swirl and spray pattern. I have to start it with ether, its a two person job.. It will sit there and rattle and chug out white smoke until it's fully warm, blowing smoke rings sometimes 3 at a time 20 feet in the air, its pretty badass to see.
I would like to resell the rolling chassis minus engine for someone looking to get into pulling, they'd have a truck ready all they would need is a motor, good idea for a cummins conversion. I had a guy offer me a 12v for $2000 complete, and i would spend a few grand on that but i dont see that happening as a pulling truck, i never have the chance to pull anyway around here.
the auto's do shift..you dont loose speed like a stick... with a stick you pick a gear and slip the clutch on take of till you get her spinning them dump the clutch and hold her there...

We definately need a video of that.

If you dont get any interests for it as a puller, shoot me a pm, I might be interested in it (whenever that is).

I think my friend knows how to make the animated pics. If we have a video, we can make one.
