Im looking to upgrade my 302 fi a lil for more torque on the low end. I found this cam that looks like it would work great and was wondering if i should get all the recommended parts and accesories to go with it too.

You don't need to upgrade the valvetrain if it's in good condition and doesn't have excessive milage, but you do need new lifters and it's always a good idea to install a new timing set with a new cam.

You don't need to replace the timing set unless the chain is loose or there are wear marks on the sprockets.

The cam looks fine for a street application with a stock exhaust, but don't expect this to be any huge torque increase, maybe not even noticable.

When replacing a flat tappet cam these days, there are several things that you need to be aware of:

Make sure to use the very best lifters you can find. Use premium lifters from Comp or Crane. A few years ago most of the US lifter production shut down which caused an influx of super cheapie Chinese junk that won't last 'til you get around the block, probably litterally.

Secondly, don't use standard motor oils with a flat tappet cam. This includes synthetics like Mobil One. They don't have the ZDDP additives that are required for flat tappets. Use Chevron Delo 400, Mobil Delvac or Shell Rotella T. This is what the truckers use in their diesels and these oils have the necessary additives.

Thirdly, use a zinc additive break in lube like that from Comp, Crane or EOS from the Chevy dealer if they have it.

Use one of these oils, the break in additive and follow the cam makers break in instructions TO THE LETTER. If you don't follow this advice you have a very high chance of wiping out your new cam and lifters.

Good luck,

The exhaust system is getting replaced right after the motor work is done. Long tube headers, dual exhaust into bullets.

The motor has less than 50000 on it. So what would be your suggestions on what i should get than? the cam is a definate, the lifters, break in lube and what else?

That's all you need, I mentioned the timing set already.. you may or may not need one and you won't know until you take the timing cover off. The 5.8 I'm upgrading only has about 50,000 miles on it and the timing chain shows a bit of slack so I'm replacing it.

Yes, opening up and inspecting is the ONLY way you ever know what needs to be replaced. An engine is "like a box of chocolates!"
