part of that tag looks familiar, like the one from my 88 f 350, 4:10 ratio gears and I think the L indicates it is a locker, but I am not the 'guru' of decodes...do you need an extra locker?

No. It is for sale and I am considering buying it for my project truck. I wanted to know, for sure, what it was. It has the typical sterling full floating hubs that stick way out, no fill hole in back cover, small ring hump, etc... But I am trying to be thorough. Thank you. Kirt

I know that I spun a shim on my 88 f 350 rear that caused a humming in rear diff., from the tolerances being altered, when I had everything replaced as a precaution, it is used often as a work vehicle, I was told that the 10.25 had something that was weaker about them once you moved into the 4:10 ratio and up.

4L10 = 4.10-1 with Limited Slip.

The first use of the Sterling 10.25 rear axle was in 1985.

NumberDummy, what was the issue/concern w/ the 4.10 and up ratio,i.e.-4.88 etc being weaker, because of the larger gears or ????

I've never heard of this problem before.

You might contact Ed Olson @FTEpartsguy.com and ask him.

Thank you, everyone. Sometime during the night, I realized I have this question posted in the wrong forum. I should have put it in the differential/axle forum. It wasn't a question specific to the 73-79 trucks. I'll get this figured out. Kirt
