Dana 61 gears

I have a 1976 F250 2WD, 460 auto with the stock Dana 61 in the rear. It has 3.07 in it, and they are too tall for my 35" tires. Has any one done a gear swap/ traction device on these? -Thanks

yea, luckily the 460's got some love done to it, so it almost gets out of it's own way! I've heard that the Dana 61 was a goofball rear, and not to many shops will touch them. Also heard Dana 60 stuff will fit with modifications, I duuno if it all worth the trouble. Thanks for the quick reply.....

As i was told, the D61 is a D60 with a steeper offset pinion, to acomadate much lower gears via your 3.07 instead of like 3.55's. They were used mainly in lincolns and such and are pretty rare in trucks... because of the pinion offset the tallest gear you can get for it is a 4.11. I would go with 3.73's or even 3.55's for good mpg and good performance... unless you have overdrive, then go for the 4.11's. Im runnin 3.55's with 35's and 4 spd... apparently alot ppl on here cant drive cuz alot say you cant do that without burning the clutch, but mine is plenty fine. My C6 didnt mind it either.

Thanks for the input. I can still spin my tires,(tire, peg leg) with a little help by making a right turn! I'm looking at a Dana 60 with 3.73's off of a 73' one ton. Does it matter if this rear came off a dually? I'm pretty sure it dosen't, but some confirmation would be nice. I'll check Bronco Graveyard.

Easier to swap out the whole rear axle assembly.
Check the width-wheel mount spacing of the dually-might be different. Other than that, perhaps spring perches-the rest should be easy.

NO Lincoln or any FoMoCo passenger car ever used a Dana 61, Dana 60, or any Dana rear end other than Spicer (Dana) 44's from 1949 thru 1956.

Lincolns used 9 inchers 1957 thru 1982, 8.8's ever since.

Dana 61's while somewhat rare in 1973/79 F250's are far more common in 1980 and later F250's.

E250's also used Dana 61's.

The only "Panel Van" I've ever heard of was the P Series Parcel Delivery made from 1951 thru 1975. The P Series chassis was used for the first motor homes, one was the Condor, which used all Ford components.

The P Series was used by UPS, Frito-Lay and other companies. It's a similar vehicle to the Chevrolet Step Van. 1975 was its last year of production.

Thunderjet, thanks bud, doing the swap sounds easier. Sounds like there are more options for the '60. NumberDummey, dude, you're the man! You gotta meet Larry @ Blue Oval Truck parts, you two could shoot the sh#t for hours.

If this rear end is truly out of a 1-ton, I think you'll find its a D70.

I'm doing this exact swap in my '77 F250 CS (originally a 400/C6, now 472/C6), with a 3.07 D61, replacing it with a '78 D60 w 3.54's.

I will double check the axle tag, but I'm sure it said D 60 w/3.73's. I said it was a one ton because thats what it was tagged with , so who know's for sure.
