Problem with 1967 auto tranny

I just looked today at a 1967 F250 Camper Special,V8(owner said it was a 390) and automatic,it looked kinda interesting, with one real concern! owner said that A/t worked fine cold, when warm it lost reverse, forward gears still work warm. does this sound like a familiar issue? Im sorry to say,im not sure which auto it has. it is def. a 1967,has proper hood 250 Id plates, and no seperate door locks inside, and the distinctive 1967 heater/vent controls....any thoughts greatly appreciated, thanks Bob

ibob, The seller probably would challenge you to a duel over it being a 390 vr the 352 that it most likely is. The 390 would have to have been transplanted, which is possible.

Is the gear selector clear with a green dot on it? 67 auto would have been the C-O-M and probably needs rebuild.

Personally I would spent the $7-800.00 and get it rebuilt rather that have to be worried with it, or replace it with a rebuilt C6. IMHO

What's the asking on it?

John,Yeah im aware of the fact that almost all FE's become 390's on sale day,and i should have stated that the owner said it was a 390.gear selector/indicator is clear,i didnt notice whether it had a green dot on it. drivers side floorboard has a big rust hole, its missing the dash pad, windshield is cracked, but the body is straight, grille is good, its got factory aux fuel tank with skid plate?,camper special id plates on side of cowl, relatively new paint(which may hide further problems) He's asking $750, so assuming your figures of $7-800.00 are correct,it would be $1500 truck before i could drive it,and thats not figuring in dash pad, windshield, floor, etc. unless the 67 C/S's are really scarce, its probably not worth it,thanks By the way

MX Cruise-O-Matic = 14 trans pan bolt holes.

C6 = 17 trans pan bolt holes. Squarish trans pan has a large notch in it.

As original 1967: 352 2V w/a MX Cruise-O.

IMHO, I wouldn't give over $350.00 for it, just too many better to choose from, if you take your time looking of course.

very true!with all the economic issues right now,not to mention gas prices,im seeing some pretty good deals out there now. Im talking with one guy who's got a 1971 F100 4x4 who wants $500,another guy who has a 71 or 72 F250 camper special for $500,and a 1970 F350 cab/chassis built up as a small motorhome for $1400,and im hoping to hear back from someone who has a 71 or 72 F250 crew cab,but hasnt figured his price.... Im figuring that ive got about $2000 in my "buy another truck i dont really need" fund, and ive still got parking for 1 or 2 trucks........

i agree. with steep gas prices people are letting these things go a dime a dozen. i paid $400 for my truck and there was nothing wrong with it. if that thing needs work i would try and haggle him a bit. but maybe it needs too much work and the seller is making out the problem to be less than what it is.

One thing to consider is rust. CA vehicles are not known for being rusty, but...

While the vehicle may be in CA now, that doesn't mean it was sold new in CA originally.

So, how does one tell where it was sold?

If the DSO code is 71 (SoCal) or 72 (NorCal), it was sold in CA new, any other code, it was not.

All 3 of my Ford VIN plates have dso codes of 72,so at least there bodies were sold in No Ca. originally,as far as there frames, running gear, etc, i will probably never know. Ive had my share of rusty trucks, and at least a few were verifiable Ca. trucks. Here in the SF bay area,we get a lot of fog,and we have some areas at least that get a lot of salt air from ocean and bay.I owned a 1968 International travelette(crew cab) with enough rust that on a quiet evening you could almost hear it rusting! off topic,Bill, did you do any fishing on your vacation,or did you spend your entire time answering all our questions?
