'67 F250 Project - Porting Heads and stuff

Well I haven't come up with a name for this build yet... This is the 3rd bump I've owned and deeply regretted selling the first two (although I never got around to restoring them like I wanted to). So with that in mind when I found this truck I decided it was time to actually start a "project" instead of just buying a truck and hoping to restore it someday. I'll say right off the bat that I'm not trying to build a show truck and I don't have a ton of money to put into my project. I'm doing it for fun and so I can drive around a nice truck with the pride of my hard work. Also, for my 4 year old son to see it come together and possibly drive it someday.

So... I found this truck on craigslist listed for $1500.

I went and looked at the truck. It had been sitting the same spot for 7 years. Threw a battery in it. Poured a little gas down the carb, and it fired right up. It was cleaner than I expected. Got to talking the guy and we realized he and his father were customers of mine at my recently sold auto repair shop. I offered $800 for the truck. He said I could have it for $500. SOLD SIR.

Took the truck home and sold the camper the next day for $200. NICE!

$300 initial investment... not bad at all.

Further investigation in daylight showed the whole front end has been converted to a dual piston power disc brake and power steering set up from a '73 - '75 truck. Truck was originally Wimbledon White with a 352 and Cruise-o-Matic tranny. Those have been replaced 460 and fresh C6.

After a good pressure wash here's what I got for body panels:

Tires are HUGE! ha ha 33x12.50R16.5s

Only rusted through spot on the whole truck is on the bottom/front of the passenger door and a 6" spot in the bed floor where water must have gotten trapped under the camper. There is some surface rust above the seem the bed but not bad. The underside of the truck is so clean! No cab rot! LUCKY ME!!

Last Sunday Wyatt (my 4 year old son) and I spent all day in the garage. Yanked the engine and learned more about it.

Came out of a '73 Lincoln. Had a cam sprocket with nylon capped teeth and ALL the nylon was broken off and sitting the oil pan. It has never been rebuilt. Stock internals and everything looks decent.

Got the engine stripped down to the short block. I pulled just one piston for the now to see what I had. The pistons are originals.

So just for the record. I only have a very small single car garage to do this project. On top of that only half of my truck fits in there at a time ha ha (front or back only)... So don't let space hold you back if you don't have room to work on your truck!

Okay so after the motor was out my parts search began. I'm constantly on craigslist and ebay shopping for deals.

Got this Edelbrock 1411 750cfm with elec. choke new in the box for $120 (cost $350 or more from summit).

and this Edelbrock Performer intake from another guy for $135 ($250 or so from summit)

Found a set of D0VE heads (1970 429 heads with smaller combustion chamber and studded rockers) for $100

(trying to decide if I'm going to go stock on the valve train or splurge on a roller rocker set up. If I go roller rocker they're going to be comp cams spendy Ultra Pro Magnum XDs with 3/8" push rods... still haven't decided yet but I'm leaning towards the roller set up.. ANYWAY...

I ordered and new Cam Kit (High Energy .494/.494) from Summit for $390 and got it this week. Also got an adjustable pushrod length checking tool for when I get to that point.

So next up is the machine work. I need to get some money together and will be ordering my piston and ring kit first. Will be going .030" over with speed pro flat tops. With the higher compression d0ve heads I should be somewhere around 10.5:1 - 10.8:1 compression. I plan to port and polish the heads myself before taking those to the machine shop.

Welp... that's where I'm at so far. Updates will likely be slow. This is a poor mans build on a budget while keeping the quality as high as I possibly can. Remember I'm not building a show truck here guys BUT I am going to have something fast, loud, and fun to drive.

Got bored for a little while at work yesterday and sanded down my oil pan.

Got fix couple little dents, wire wheel and straighten the rail. Was going to do my stock valve covers too but I'm still not sure if I'll be able to keep them (depending on if I go roller rockers or not). I really like the valve covers though.

So on another note:

Here are my previous bumps:
'68 F100 460 4 Speed

'72 F100 360 Auto:

Wish I wouldn't have sold either but oh well... Pretty stoked that my new truck is a '67. Kind of cool having the first year even though it's a little harder to find certain parts.

Pretty small update for today. Found a killer deal for some 67 F250 badges

Picked up the pair for $25!

Also made some progress on refinishing my first valve cover today during downtime at work. Got the rest of it down to bare metal and fixed all the dents as well as the rail. Didn't have a real hammer and dolly set up (which I will be getting tomorrow) so I still have a little bit of smoothing out to do. This first one was beat to hell.

Well that's all I have for today. Should be dropping the block off at the machine shop early next week.

I just got back home from a pretty great parts run. Went to go pick up the '67 emblem from the guy off craigslist. I asked him what else he had laying around and found out he had a set of mint inside door panels with 2 sets of trim, arm rest with no rips, inside door handles, window cranks, a bunch of different dash switches, a '67 radio bezel, a cluster in almost perfect condition (mine is trashed), F.O.R.D. letters for the front of the hood, tons of trim clips, mint wiper arms, a spare tire jack/accessory set, and a few other misc parts in a box. Got everything for $180.

Stopped at ACE on the way home and have the emblems soaking in stripper right now to refinish them.

Okay so I spent the afternoon working on my hood badges after being inspired by Rich's post above...

Here's the before pic:

While I let the Ford 250 badges soak in stripper I spent a little time cleaning up my newly re-homed F.O.R.D. letters:

After some paint stripper, tooth brush (which didn't work), a detailing wire brush, and a bunch of scrubbing:

Then I spent several hours and several Coronas taping off the first emblem. Now I've never painted anything in my life so this seemed extremely difficult for me but with a **** load of patience it seemed to work out well. I used a #2 exacto knife and took my sweet *** time:

After 3 coats of Rustoleum self etching primer (3 minutes between each coat) and 3 coats of Rustoleum Sunrise Red (also 3 minutes between coats) I ended up with this:

I waited about 30 minutes after final coat to pull the masking tape. I had to clean up a couple tiny spot where the paint bled though the tape/under the tape with a Q-tip and a very tiny amount of xylol. I may use a brush to touch up a couple small spot but from 2 or 3 feet away it looks almost perfect.

Here's a before and after:

Got the other badge painted tonight as well but don't have a pic of that one yet. It was WAY easier to mask now that I had the process a little more figured out.

How do you know the parts came from a 1975 F250?

Truck was originally Wimbledon White with a 358 (352 2V only V8 available in 1965/67 F100/350's) and Cruise-O-Matic tranny.
You sure this truck is a 1967? It has 1968/72 hood side emblems with yellow reflectors.

1967's may look the same as 1968/72's but looks can be deceiving. 1967's have over 100 parts that are 1967 only.

Besides the hood emblems that do not have any reflectors, 1967: You push the inside door handles forward to look the doors. 1968/72's have door lock *****.

Because of this, the 1967 door shells and most of the internal parts are 1967 only. Other 1967 only parts: Ignition switch, instrument cluster backs, brake and clutch pedals, bracket they suspend from under the dash, master cylinders, power brake boosters, proportioning valves, radio, heater, dash, firewall, grilles and etc etc etc.

Dual piston caliper disc brakes were optional for 1968/72 F250 2WD's and F350's.

Well Bill, the truck used to be Wimbledon white. What if it was wrecked in the front and they found a 68/69 front clip?

Yep it's a '67. The hood emblems were swapped at one point in it's life and the ugly side reflectors were added. The '67 hoods are also even slightly different underneath from later years and my hood is the factory '67 with Wimbleton White under the brown (I sanded a couple layers of paint off last night). At first I thought maybe the hood was swapped but looks like the PO just swapped the original emblems for the reflector emblems. You can't see it in the pictures but the grill is a '67 grill. Also if you read further down the post and look at my inside door panels, they are '67 door panels. My heater controls are also the '67 only controls as well as the radio being small in size.

This is the reason I got some '67 emblems and refinished them if you continue reading towards the bottom of the post.

I meant to type the brakes and steering are from a '73 - '75 truck, my bad. The 460 came out of a '73 Lincoln. It originally had a 352 (sorry the 358 was a typo) in it which also only cam in the '67s.

Thanks! I'm going to go with Dark Ford Blue on the block, heads, and timing cover. Silver on the oil pan, valve covers, water pump, and intake. Black on the accessory brackets and pulleys.

Not 100% on what color the truck is going to be but Wyatt and I are leaning towards this:

LOL I was awake and bored this morning on my day off at 5AM so I borrowed my 4 year old son's crayons and markers. ha ha.

I know it sounds ridiculous but I think I'm going to give the Rustoleum Roll On Paint Job a shot.

I did read the part about you going to a junkyard...after you edited it into post #2. And if you notice in post #4 where I quoted your post #1, you said 1975 F250 parts.

Anouther color combo I love is a dark forest or emerald green and white. You can also get paint from tractor supply for the same price and they have a good variety of colors. My truck is going to be ford blue and international grey or matte black and caterpillar yellow

hmmm. Never went to a junkyard (gotten everything off craigslist) but yes I did edit my typing mistakes after you pointed out I hadn't gotten everything down correctly. Thanks for your help it was a ton of typing and I figured I would screw something up along the way until a nice fellow like you pointed it out.

One upgrade I would consider would be a AOD or a Gear Vendor over drive. Itll make the highway drives alot more fun. Also I have learned. Go with a external trans cooler behind the grill. 1. It will keep trans temp cooler since the water that is 165-210 isnt heating up the trans cooler and 2. It will be bigger to allow more trans fluid to be cooled its a win win

I do love the idea of doing an overdrive. It would be one of the last things on my list (only because the tranny is one of the only things I don't have to fix yet ha ha) but it's definitely something I'd like to research.
