transmission question...

transmission question...

I have a 2003 F250 6.0 diesel with an automatic. The transmission went out and the warranty will not cover it so I was going to change it myself. The thing that I am not sure about is the fact that I can't turn the engine to take the nuts off of the torque converter/flywheel because of the really small access hole. Is there a special tool that I need to be able to get these nuts off and to turn the engine enough to get them off? Or can I pull the transmission off and leave the torque converter attached to the flywheel and just hope that it will slide all the way back into the transmission when i put it back in? Has anyone changed one of these and have any know-how? Any ideas or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

You need to use a ratchet and socket on the crank bolt to turn the motor over to loosen the TC fasteners. I haven't done any 5r110w's, but it shouldn't be too dissimilar to a 4r100.

I have removed my trans twice and the best way I found was the bump the starter with a remote button or a screwdriver. I used the small opening at the bottom of the bell housing to remove the nuts, some like the opening on the driver side, use which ever works best for you and the tool you are using.
