When I slow down almost to a stop my abs kicks in, I have had both sensors replaced in the front within the last 2yrs and I just replaced the vss so I thought maybe the rears might not be pulling thier weight while braking causing the abs to kick in.
Jack up the rear end, put transmission in neutral. (Make sure you block the front wheels, so it doesnt roll away) On the inside of the backing plate near the bottom, there should be an oval shaped rubber plug, pull it out. Using a brake adjuster, or a screwdriver will work if you dont have an adjuster, turn the adjusting screw until the shoes start to drag on the drum. (spin the tire as you are adjusting, and you will hear the shoes make contact) Turn the screw a few more times, until the tire stops. Stick a small screwdriver into the slot and push the adjusting lever (the little lever that holds the adjusting screw from backing off) away from the teeth and hold it there. Turn the adjusting screw backwards about 10-12 notches, until you can turn the tire again. Make sure you keep track of how many times you turn it, as you will want to adjust the other side the same amount. Then repeat for the other side.
Rear drum brakes are supposed to be auto-adjusting, but as Ben noted they can also be manually adjusted by removing the rubber plug from the backing plate and turning the adjusting screw star wheel.
On this topic is there an easy way to disable the ABS circuit so I can use the truck safely until I get it fixed?? I tried the fuse but that killed the spedo too! I tried pulling the relay but that appeared to do absolutely nothing??
The lazy man's way of adjusting the rear breaks is to beck up briskly and then apply the brakes. This activates the self adjusters. Do this several times and your brakes should be adjusted. Also, after you do this you shouldn't have to depress the brake pedal as much to apply the brakes.
So I tried to adjust the bakes as was mentioned with no luck, so I pulled off the drums and everthing was siezed tight, also there was a broken spring on the one side and there was no way the self adusters were working so I'm hoping that when I get them rebuilt my issue will go away. I'll let you know.
