Help.. Transmission going?

Hi all, new to the forum..

I have a 2003 Explorer 2WD 5 speed automatic.

When accelerating, it seems that the transmissions is hesitating a bit. I've noticed this on accelerating and decelerating. It's like the transmission is confused in which gear to go into or it's going into the wrong gear. I'm not sure...

1) Is it the transmission?

2) Where is the best place to get this checked.. a dealer? anyone else?

whenever my transmissions start acting up, the first thing I do is change the fluid. If you haven't done that, Ford recomends it every 50K...........good luck...........

i would start with the fluid also. it might be a sticking solenoid due to crud. change the filter in teh pan also, and wipe out the pan.

Be sure to use the exact fluid called for in the owners manual.

A warning on transmission flushes. I DO NOT reccommend them when a customer comes in w/ a problem. Usually. I see it this way. If there is a slipping problem, clutch material is being burned off and going into the fluid. When you flush out that fluid, all the clutch material suspended in the fluid gone, and now there is no friction between the clutches. Now, all that means is that there is still a problem, and now you're broken down out on the road somwhere, facing a tow bill. Find the problem first. If it's a valve body fault or bsically anything other than slipping (burned) clutches, I might see doing a flush AFTER repairing the problem just to get the old fluid out. Otherwise, why spend the money on fluid that will have to be drained when you have to go back in to fix whatever is wrong that the flush didn't fix?

Friction material in the fluid does not provide friction. The material is being burned away because the bands and clutches are already slipping.

There is nothing to be gained by keeping the old fluid in there. I would agree at not just having a flush. There is something wrong. It is amazing however at what a fluid change can fix. Many problems will go away with nothing more than new fluid. I can't say this is the case for you, but its worth a shot. Fluid is cheap compared to repairs.

Some people prefer just dropping the pan and fluid and not flushing it all out, sort of less shocking to the system.
