I don't know what the deal is here. Last fall I replaced the clutch and installed a new slave cylinder in my 96 F150. It hasn't been quite a full year yet since I did the work... since then I have had to replace the slave cylinder twice. The part is under warranty it's no big deal except I have to drop the tranny to get at it. All of the parts were purchased at the local NAPA... the defective slave was replaced no questions asked but yet again tonight it failed. Has any one else had the problem with internal slave cylinders on these trucks? What would cause them to fail repeatedly? I am getting really tired of having to drop the tranny out of this truck every 4 or 5 months. Any ideas!
The initial cost is probably quite a bit more, but when you look at dropping the tranny every six months, a hundred bucks starts to sound like a pretty good deal, especially since the original lasted 11 years.
I called the Napa store this morning and the owner (who I know pretty well) agreed to try another brand. The one I originally purchased was the Napa brand... most likely made in China or Mexico. Anywho he ordered a Raybestos brand replacement. I guess we'll see how it holds up. If all else fails I plan to get a Motorcraft replacement. Thanks guys! Appreciate the feedback!
Hey man, if you wouldnt mind, try to keep us posted with how the replacement works for you.
I have to replace mine in the near future when i yank the tranny out, and although Im probably going for a ford replacement, it would be nice to see what does and doesnt work
I have a 92, Ford Explorer, 4x4, 5 speed. I got a NAPA slave cylinder and it was defective, leaking at the bleeder base. Pulled the trans again and put in another NAPA slave cylinder via the warranty swap and watched the fluid leak again out of the same spot on the replacement part. These were NAPA brand @ a bit over $100. I was not too happy. Called the Ford dealer and the part was $190. but it would be 4 days to get it. Got a full refund from NAPA plus a quart of brake fluid for free (the manager was nice) and got a Checker Auto slave for $64. Not a "pretty" as the NAPA one, but it actually had a smoother action when I pushed the bearing back and forth.
Put it in, put the trans back in (I'm getting really FAST in getting it to line up with so much practice!), bleed the air out of the system. No leaks, smooth action.
The only thing that I noticed about the NAPA bleed screw was that it was torqued on VERY tight at the factory. Maybe that damaged the seal? Maybe they forgot to put a seal in there or the parts were machined wrong?
Lifetime warranty on the Checker Auto slave cylinder as opposed to 1 year on the NAPA one.
