I was wondering which programmer would be best for my 97 F-250 PSD Auto. Looking into a programmer to help boost fuel economey and bump up the power a little. Any advice on the best one to get would be much appreciated.
First off, welcome to FTE. get your wallet ready b/c we love to spend money here. LoL
DP-Tuner makes a mean chip. the 80hp econo tune will boost your mpg some and the 120hp tune will certainly boost your power for sure. check them out at dp-tuner dot com
you will find tons and tons of info here for sure. also for better mileage you can do the 6637 intake and a 3" downpipe to 4" exhaust. there are also some small mods that you can do that are free such as a fuel pressure regulator shim, 10k mod, and a ccv mod if your interested in those also.
I'm interested in all mods that i can do, especially the free ones, haha. what is the 10k mod and ccv mod? it's gonna take me a little while to learn the language.
10k mod---- get a pack of 10k ohm resistors from radioshack. they cost like a dollar. looking at your engine without the plastic cover there is a sensor on the drivers side head towards the front of the engine with 3 wires going into it. start the engine and put a resistor between the insulation and the wire to bridge the 2 wires that are not brown. DO NOT TOUCH THE BROWN WIRE!!!!!! so put on end of the resistor between the wire and insultion on one of the wires then the other end in the other. the resistor will go quite a ways down in the sensor, so put it in as far as possible. you will know when the resistor makes connection b/c the idle of the engine will change quite a bit when it connects.
CCV mod is done by removing the Crankcase ventilation from the intake hose. You can get piece of 4" exhaust about 4" long and put it in the intake hose where the ccv goes in. Then run the rubber hose coming out of the VC (valve cover) and run it down and back a ways. Some run it all the way to the bumper and some run it just down under the truck, your choice.
Just my opinion before I did the 10k mod I would get a new DP (down pipe). It is the pipe that comes out of the turbo and goes down under the truk. It is mashed flat from the factory and cause quite a bit of heat to generated in the exhaust and engine.
There is also anothe way to do the 10k mod that some feel is better. It is called the C00n 10k mod. Basically it is very similiar to what was explained to you but instead of putting the resistor on the two wire connections. You would cut one of the wirs and put it in line. Some people use plug connections so it can be removed or so you can stack them and make a 15k etc.
The intake can be done by getting a filter from NAPA or fleetfilters.com or other place of your choice. It is a WIX filter made by Donaldson and sold by NAPA. The part # is 6637. You will take out your filter box and put the filter in it's place. You will need a piece of 4" exhaust pipe in there bent at a 45* angle.
Also TW (Tony Wildman) makes an awesome chip for our trucks. I can't remember his number or website but someone here will be able to get it for you. Or google it.
Also WELCOME to FTE we will be glad to help you and keep a close eye on your wallet because PMS (Powerstroke Mod Syndrome) is a widespread disease around here.
Neal, your going to think i'm completely stupid, but i did injectors, chip, 10k mod, 6637, stacks, etc. all before i did my downpipe.. hahahahaha. egt's dropped about 150* just running down the road and they go down WAYYY faster after a WOT pass. LoL.
definitely do the downpipe first and guages.
tony wildmans website is totaldieselperformance dot com and his number i believe is 1-817-932-5078
Tunes from Tony are awesome from what i hear and i know for a fact that jody's tunes are awesome as well. whichever way you go you won't be sorry.
