these theads often amuse me. i know the 300 is a great engine as is the 302, 351, etc...only real junk engine ford made was the early 3.8L and 4.2L v6s, after they got the headgasket isssues worked out they werent bad. i wouldnt mind a 97-03 RCSB 2wd 4.2 5 speed for a DD. decent power and decent fuel milage but i dislike the 97-03 body style.
the 300 is a great engine when used right. towing a trailer full of whatever through a field or hauling scrap, etc...it really accels but the highway towing sort of kills it where the 302 would be a little better because it is happier at the higher rpms. and the 351 is the better of both worlds. i do think the 302 is better suited for a DD or mild towing rig on the highway though just because of the better rpm range. the 300 does the DD thing well and towing at highway speeds but once it gets above 3,000 rpm it starts to fall off.
but then again u have to add gearing into the debate as well, a 302 with 4:10 gearing will pull as well down low as a 300 with 3:55 gearing...but a 300 with 4:10s wouldnt be happy at highway speeds as much as a 302 would (using stock 235/75 or 31" tires).
tell me about it, for as "advanced" as the engineers are at caterpillar, they can't seem to master the art of EGR... fines from the EPA were killing them so they decided it wasn't worth the headache to do it anymore. if i remember right, the last u'll c the Acert's is going to somewhere around 2010 (or 2012...i don't remember rightly) but as stated previously, u will c a CAT branded truck w/ a CAT transmission, but Navistar engine. also, as far as i've been told, it's only going to a severe duty truck, u kno, like Mack dump trucks?
bye bye CAT's, guess they can't keep up w/ Cummins ISX
Got the chance to drive a 1970 CST/10 (Chevy sports truck, caught me off guard too) with the original 350 (only 46k on it) which came without emissions. Never thought I would get the chance to hear the secondaries open up on a 350 in third gear at wide open throttle again in my life. For those of you who don't know.....pity. Amazing how responsive and powerful that truck was.
international is trying to make v8 for their trucks and every heavy mechanic that ive talked to says its a retarded idea and that it probably wont fly for long...iv seen some big rigs (I6) pushing OVER 2000 hp...I work at peterbilt fixin these trucks and in all my life i have yet to see a v8 in a big rig
bottom line is gasser or diesel I6's kick *** for low end torque and power
well you must be kinda young then for there has been many a V8 diesel in the big rigs. I ran the 3408 kitty in a couple KW's and my Pete and believe you me there wasn't any 6 that could touch those cats.
Don't really know how it got onto diesels engines though when this thread started out talking about the great 300 I6 and it all boils down to the fact that the 300 was the greatest gas work horse motor anyone ever built. They are still made today but just for industrial uses. Living in farm areas you still see a lot of them out there pumping water for the irrigation systems. look around the airports and most of the funny looking trucks pulling the planes around and towing the luggage bins are running the 300.
now don't get me wrong I love the 300 in my bronco, but who knew this thread would get this long with it starting out so incoherently? oh well, the 300 rules
cause the diesels we are talking about are I6's too hehe...and yes i know they are out there but since i have been workng at pete i havent seen one...my dad had a 3408 in one of his rigs too..just sayin

o ya, that's not to say that there never was a v8 diesel that could hold it's own...a farmer that i work for has a ford L8000 manure truck w/ a 2 stroke detroit v8, it's got ***** and it's friggin loud!
I was actually going to start a new thread but then I thought nope this would actually be too perfect. Went to check my oil, noticed ALL of the screws that screw the throttle plate to the rest of the carb had come all the way out!!!!!! other than running a little and by a little I mean barely noticeable, rough at idle it ran just fine, I had just took my mother in law to her doctors appointent about ten miles away from where I live, when I noticed the problem. I could move the carb around with my finger, the carb was leaning toward the front and u could see about an 8th inch gap in the back of the carb. bronco ran down the highway just fine. Most amazing engine thing I have ever saw exept when a dodge slant six still ran with a broken camshaft.

When the engine is wrapped up and running at a high RPMs. Love the screaming jimmy's

my favorite part about those engines is that the trucks that they put them it, have radio's...but it's like wat's the point, b/c u can't hear them anyway lol...
