People also need to be aware there's a huge difference between cartridge type filters and canister type filters. A cartridge type filter is integral to the proper operation of the filtration system. It does more than filter. It also mates with other components in the housing and enable them to function properly. Hence, the filter dimensions are critical. This isn't the same with a canister type filter where close is good enough and you just spin on and go. You can't apply the same thought process for a cartridge type filter. Close isn't good enough for a cartridge type filter. You need an exact replacement.

Further, it's been repeatedly stated on this site that "will fit" filters (such as Wix and a few others) are not good and will lead to eventual engine damage on the 6.0. I'm not sure why some still question why they can't use second source, non-Racor mfg filters on their truck. It's your money. But as for me, I'll stick with Racor, Motorcraft, or International filters for my trusty 6.0.

You forgot to mention the Fram CH9549 which is also a Racor manufactured filter just like the motorcraft and international. There are one or two more that repackage the Racor also.

The primary fuel filter needs to have the white aquabloc membrane around it to keep water out of your injectors. I fully realize that it has a water separator, but any added protection you can get is WORTH it. The fuel filters can be purchased from any international truck dealer for $30-40 and sometimes cheaper on sale.

I wouldn't even chance it. Even if they said it's been redesigned. They had their chance to produce the correct filter years ago and failed. Luberfiner and WIX are filter brands to stay away from with a 6.0L. Motorcraft, Fram, International and Racor are the brands to purchase, stay away from the rest (WIX, Luberfiner, etc). Watch here for members to post the Fram 2 for $7 deals at Pepboys. You can pick up 2 oil filters for $7 or 4 for $14, etc!!

They could duplicate the filters exactly if they wanted to but I suspect that's what the patent numbers on top of the Racor/Motorcraft filters prevent. Maybe I'll look that up if somebody buys me a 12-pack.
At any rate, getting the 2/$7 at Pepboys is a great deal over even the discounted will-fit brands.

The patent numbers on the Frams and the correct puralotor filters are the exact same as the mc/racor filters.

Patents are the reason that it is pretty much impossible for manufacturers other than Racor (Parker-Hannifin) to make a correct filter for the 6.0L. Racor holds most of the patents on the oil and fuel filters as well as their respective canisters...

Here is some patent research done a while ago...

I think this new Wix filter with the cap has even more issues. It does not seem to push down on the center spring area at all. I replaced mine with a Motorcraft filter and that is what I am going to use for my 6 liter from now on. I have used WIX (Carquest) filters for many years, and still believe in their regular 85515 (FL1A) type filters. That is one I would never use a FRAM unit. I have seen inside both. I try to support my local auto parts store as much as possible, would like them to stay in business, but they don't stock the Motorcraft filters. Oh well.

I'm aware that there are some other sellers of repackaged Racor filters (i.e., fram). However, I'm not confident that they won't switch to a will fit design to pad the bottom line somewhere down the road. So I refrain from recommending them as an alternative. However, I'm confident that International, Motorcraft, Racor will not change their design down the road so I have no issue recommending them.

Frank -

I agree whole-heartedly with your position. There is just too much at stake to trust a company not to begin to cut corners down the road. The arguement that they wouldn't do it because of potential law suits just doesn't hold water since we have seen other companies already making inferior products (and causing very expensive damage).

I have many years in industry and have seen what companies do to increase profit margins. They may cut corners with the glue they buy, or the type of plastic they use, etc. - it may easily be in areas you can not see AND they may even be able to keep the patent numbers on the filter. IMHO - The cost is really quite small to buy what has the highest probability of being the best procuct for the vehicle.

Rep points for sure!

That's the reason you open the box and check what you buy before you buy it. It's NOT hard to recognize the Racor filter (whatever package it might be in). The filter is ONLY manufactured by Racor. It's your money.......waste it any way you want.

My only point is that you can not see quality differences in glue or plastic. Temperature resistance, oil compatibility, and other physical properties are invisible. It sure could be a waste of money, but for $50 a year (apprx), it is insignificant in the overall cost of owning one of these truck. If Racor is the only manufacturer - great. It is all a matter of being sure - to each his own. certainly the key point is to use the proper Racor filters.

Look at our sponsors

I have been changing my own oil and filters since I bought my truck and I buy my Motorcraft/ Racor filters in bulk from our sponsors.
The idea of saving a couple of bucks on an oil filter seems a rather insignificant issue when I replace 13 1/2 quarts of synthetic oil and send a sample to Blackstone with every oil change.
Call me crazy...........
