hey guys,
Probably a stupid question, but how can I tell if i have a limited slip/locker on my axle on my '65 4x4? If it doesn't, how hard is it to install? Thanks
P.S. There is also this thing in the cab that says "lock" and points to the right to turn it to lock something. I have no clue what that is.
If you jack the rear tires off the ground and turn one tire, and the other tire rotates in the other direction, its open. I believe if it is LS they will turn in the same direction, I THINK.
Primary rig is Green Thunder:
95' F-150 XLT 4x4, 302, 5 spd, MSD 6A, Sunroof, CD player with 2 10" subs and some 32" BFG Muds .
Check out my Gallery for a look-see.
Then theres:
99' Mustang GT 4.6L
88' F-250 Superduty 4x4 351/c6
95' Mercury Cougar 4.6L V-8
80' E-350 300/6 with a
3 spd column shifter. Top speed is 65mph, Go Baby Go!
This tells you if you have a limited slip, but it doesn't tell you which ls you have. Some require a tap on the brakes while the wheels are spinning to get both wheels spinning.
You could also pull the diff cover off and take a peak inside. Couldn't hurt to change the gear oil on that old truck anyway. If you just see spider and side gears in that carrier then its open. The LS for that axle would probably be a trac-lok, it is a clutch type unit.

Thanks guys,
I'll be up at my dad's later on tonight probably and I'll jack it up and spin one tire and see what happens. There is a sticker on the dash about my front axle that says "trac-lok" but that is for the front axle and how to lock that in. (it was a statehighway truck) Do any of you know what the little twist **** under my dash would be that says "lock" and points to the right to turn it? Thanks for the replies!
Try it the fun way and dump the clutch. If you leave two rubber marks, it's a LS!!! If it's an open carrier, you'd have to spend a few $ to get one, then unless you have the knowledge, and the tools, you'd have to have one set your rearend back up. Setup is usually around $150 - $200, plus however much you spend on your LS unit.
MWC, I kinda tried that about an hour ago. I haven't tried it on pavement though seems how its only a 300 6 with 12.5 wide mudd brutes I kinda think I would have problems spinning just one tire . I did try it in the gravel and both spun, but does it work in gravel too? Thanks for the replies guys.
