I am about to change my fuel filters for the first time. I researched the filter number and came up with a FD-4604 part number. Went online and the part number their was FD-4609. I came back here and searched the archives again and found a post saying some the the earlier 2008 trucks use the earlier 6.0l engine fuel filters on the rail, and the newer ones on the engine... Any definative word here before I lay out the buck for the wrong filter? My truck is a VERY early job one 2008 truck (January 2007).
Also - any tips for replacing these? I know the one on the rail is much harder to replace.
I am pretty sure the 08's have the same size filters on the frame as the 03-07 6.0L's but the filter on top of the motor is larger on the 08's than the 03-07 6.0's
Carquest has provided me with the wrong filter pair for my April '07 Job 1. I've had to buy mine from the dealer (in the form of a kit).
You'll find that removing the filter under the truck can be a real pain. Ford routed some wiring harnesses right behind mine, and usually replacment is coupled with some strong words about whomever the "junior engineer" was at ford that designed it...
Yes the rail mounted filter can be the royal pain but all i did is let the fuel drain out of the water collector for about 5 min and disconnected the clip where the brake line runs beside the houseing and just routed the brake line out of the way. took my snap on socket with a short extention and the rachet and off the cover came with little to no spillage. after that just rammed the wiring bundle out of the way and prayed to god and about 3 min later the filter came out. going back in took about a min. and that was doing it all on the floor. no hoist was available. hopefully that may help you out a bit
2X6 Bulldog - I thought the diesel shower was part of the filter change process. Laying under the truck on your back leaves you no where to run to (no where to hide) when the filter comes off. Don't know why I didn't think about draining it. How much fuel drains out of the water collector before it is empty? The real question is how large a container do I need to catch the drained fuel?

How often or what mileage do you recommend to change both fuel filters? The book shows 15K, but with little off road use, do you feel it is necessary that early?
Mine were extremely clean at my first two 15k mile change intervals. I try to buy my diesel from a high volume truck stop so maybe it is that paying off. I am still going to keep these intervals for peace of mind though
