Transmission Tail Shaft???

Hello everyone,

I have a 98 ranger with the 2.5 4 cyl. and Automatic transmission. I removed the driveshaft last night to install new u-joints and a rear seal in the transmission. I noticed that the tail shaft is "loose" and I am able to move it with my finger at least 1/4 to 1/2 inch. The question is, should I be able to move this at all or am I looking at some serious problems here? Also, it has almost 174,000 miles on it.

Well, play about 1 mm is not a problem.
usually, Motorcraft seals do not leak. National seals may leak.

If you have more then 1 mm play check slip yoke for wear, but usually small bearing in tail is worn. I did it w/o tranny drop. I unscrewd rear end of tranny (with parking lock there), replaced bearing and had to machine it in workshop (i could not put DS in).

I think your asking about the output shaft of the transmission, the shaft the drive shaft yoke slides onto, right?

Its not a problem for that shaft to move around alot.

Its supported buy the yoke of the drive shaft and the extension housing bushing thats sits just behind the rear seal

Movement of the output shaft/tail shaft is normal for automatics and manual transmissions. It's a built in amount of play because of variances of tail shaft housings not always being that square with the transmission housing. And like jk080 said, that's what the bushing in the tail shaft housing is there for. Just make sure the bushing is in good shape as well as the smooth tube area of the output yoke that rides in the busing and you shouldn't have any problems. The rear seal should be in good shape too.
