A 4R70w transmission out of a 2000 F150 2WD is sitting in my '70 F100. I just received a Bauman Engineering Quick 1 transmission controller that, if I'm understanding it correctly, needs connections to a speed sensor. Seems reasonable that it would.
The 2000 4R70W has a plastic plug in the tail housing where the speedometer cable (or speed sensor?) would plug in. With the transmission installed, I can't see in the hole to see what's there.
Can anyone tell me if that tail shaft would already be set up for a speed sensor or for a speedometer cable? I've already put some ATF in and hope to avoid removing the tail housing.
There is listed a speed sensor for 2000-2003 4r70w transmissions in some build applictions.
Later trucks used a speed sensor located on the rear end housing that counts from the ring gear.
The difference is in the counts the PCM software is designed to accept.
The signal from the ring gear has much higher counting resolution.
This signal is used for a number of other funtions from the ABS to the GEM and road speed indication.
See if you can use a small inspection mirror and a light to look in.
Good luck
If the tail shaft is set up for a speed sensor, what would I see on it? If there is a speedometer gear on the tail shaft I guess it would not be equipped for a speed sensor.
A speed sensor would have a wheel type gear with projections called a reluctor, that when passing by the sensor produces a voltage output.
The old time speedo gear needs a helical gear to drive the sensor whether a cable or electric type.
Can you remove the cross member and lower the trans enough to take a look?
Good luck.
Thanks for the answers. I'll try the mirror but expect the transmission will have to be lowered to see what's in there. I know that the transmission has to be completely disassembled to change the tail shaft so I really need that good luck.
I was able to see in the speedo cable/speed sensor hole without lowering the transmission. No reluctor but there is a speedo gear cut into the output shaft.
Bauman Engineering has great customer support. Kevin told me there is a speed sensor built into that transmission. Its a 90 degree, 2-pin connector on the driver's side of the main body of the transmission.
Its all good. The transmission has a speed sensor AND a speedo gear on the output shaft.
Good to hear.
Bauman knows all the Trasmissions by year and model.
Iv'e delt with them years ago.
Their website has a lot of info to research but not every little item is there unless you call them.
I know I could not tell you accurately because of all the variations used.
Good luck.
