I'll make a long story short.it was running fine pulled the battery for another vehicle.hwen putting new battery in it was backwards.yeah it was not a goos thing.it did get the starting module ,selinoid (sp) seems ok.It cranks fine won't fire .I replaced the module any other thoughts? Thanks M
The first step would be to put a test light on the coil and see if you have steady power on the + (POS) wire and that it flashes on the tach side while you crank it.
Does your radio come on, lights?
Let us know what you find.
If I were guessing I would say you have bad fuse links coming off the starter solenoid on the battery side of it.
If you can stretch them they are bad.
I only have time to get to it on the weekend
it turns over so I assume that means the starter and solenoid are good.I replaced starter module and coil I notice the positive cable gets hot when cranking and one of the solenoid posts is hot.
I have no headlights but do have running lights
the battery is new but doesn't seem to want to stay up
the warning brake light stays on(That is a know issue with truck when running but don't remember it being on all the time ...just when running )
Thanks M
Take the battery cables off the starter solenoid and clean them (wire brush) real good. When something gets hot it is either a bad (dirty) connection or it it is drawing to much current.
You may also have shorted a diode in the alternator and you may have to replace the alternator.
As you have figured I am pretty ignorant but I am capable of learning.I thought the alternator was to keep the battery recharged,It can keep a vehicle from starting? Thanks M

Yes and here is how.
If you put the battery in backwards the diodes inside the alternator can short or leak.
Then it will not charge as good as it should or not at all and then you will be discharging the battery as you drive..
Also when the engine is not running the bad diode will discharge the battery and a low or dead battery will not start the engine.
PS
most auto part stores can check the alternator.
That certainly would explain the battery drain so I'll get it checked out.I tried starting it with a fully charged battery last night and it cranked great but I got no fire so I'm gonna have to run the lines I'm thinking. Thanks so much I'll keep ya posted .M
Did the line test everything looked good, however it is smokin hot at the selenoid when i crank it.I can't find the attachment button to post pictures of the area and don't use public places like photobucket to host.Any other thoughts. Some friens mentioned theres a rotor under the distributer that ma have fried.M
