I would suggest getting a Transmission "Flush", and maybe some anti shutter fluid to try and milk that transmission as much as possible before a rebuild is needed.
I have already changed hte fluid and filter and dont know if i want to risk doing a flush on an older high mileage transmission as i have heard this can potentially cause larger problems. I just pulled a code 452 which I guess means an error in the VSS or PSOM signal. I don't know what either of these are so if anyone could give me an idea where to go from here that'd be wonderful! I feel like I'm one step closer to getting this truck straight, haha.

That could be the PSOM (speedo/odo computer), VSS (sensor in rear pumpkin), ABS module, or the wiring between these. When the speed signal goes wonky then the computer has no way to know how fast you are going. It then can't pick good shift points so it uses a preset program that is good enough to keep you moving but is hard on the transmission.
Hopefully someone else will chime in with a good way to troubleshoot this problem. I'd start with the connector at the rear axle and make sure it is clean. You can also pull the sensor out of the axle and clean off any metal paste that may have built up there. Other than that you could be forced to try swapping out the parts one at a time.
The bright side is that your tranny and fluid is probably not to blame for the issues.
Alright i'll check/clean the VSS! you have been a huge help Calvin. What i find remarkable is the relatively small amount of problems that do happen with our complex modern vehicles. There are just so many things to go wrong when you think about it... damn
Ok so I cleaned both the part of the VSS that goes into the pumpkin and the electrical connection and reset the computer and drove around some and didn't have any of the previous symptoms. If it messes up again I'll be sure to pull the codes and follow up to see if further troubleshooting is necessary.

So how's the truck so far? Have you had to do anything else besides cleaning the VSS?
I cleaned it and it worked good for a while but today i had the same symptoms... I will try to pull the codes again tomorrow and see if i still get the 452.
So i have been having this problem continually on and off except now occasionally the truck seems like it comes out of gear and then slams back in while im driving. I pulled codes and still get the 452... The truck leaks oil and i am wondering if some oil keeps seeping into the plug to the VSS? The whole rest of the rear end is coated, lol. I am going to try cleaning it again and packing the plug full of die-electric grease to maybe keep that ***** out of there... As I posted before the speedo needle fluctuates about 3 mph at highway speeds. I dont know if this helps to pinpoint any single sensor, etc.
Sounds like the pinion seal is gone. On the 8.8" axle, the pinion nut is famous for coming loose and allowing the seal to leak. But that won't cause your speedo problem.
The coming out of gear and then back in - does it seem like the tranny slips into neutral for a moment? If it does, your MLPS is shot. It's a sensor on the side of the tranny that converts the column selector position into an signal for the tranny to understand. When it goes, the tranny thinks you put it in neutral.
The oil leak is coming from the motor, not the rear end... Is there any way to check the shift sensor to verify that it is the problem before I go buy a new one only to find the real issue was something else? Thanks for the quick reply! By the way, I packed the plug and sensor full of di-electric grease today and reset the computer and the truck has been performing excellent. I am driving 140+ miles back to school tonight so we will see for sure if that fixed the code 452! I will be sure to keep you all posted
