i got a 2000 F.250 4x4 with the factory tow package, i went to put a brake controller in it and the harness that is susposed to be in there was not there, so there was 4 wires that matched the colors on my brake controller so i hooked them up, no power, my question is there a fuse some were that controls that because my buddy has a 01 and the plug is there, you think ford may have "forgot to put one there", ive owned this truck since new, i was there at the dealer when they got it off the truck, ordered everything on it, wish i would have got the 7.3 but that shouldnt make a difference, i got the 5.4
It definitely should have been there. I'm trying to remember where exactly I've found them, but I do remember it was difficult on some. The harness was tucked in one of the cross braces and possibly clipped to something.
As I remember it, the wire colors were not a dead match to the controllers I installed. The stock pigtail had the wire colors on it for when I had to splice it. The first thing I would do is verify you have a wire the goes hot when you press the brake, one wire should do this regardless of any other fuses. Then I would check for continuity from the blue wire to the trailer plug. If all that is good, then add a fuse or run a new power wire.
I recently put one in my 01. I removed the kick panel cover and looked to the right. There was a hole in one of the braces that I could see the connector through. I've also heard that it can be found close to the fire wall connected to a brace slightly above the gas pedal. To have complete functionality you'll need to install two relays in a small black box that hangs off the fuse box in the engine bay. There's also two 30A maxi fuses that need to be installed in that same fuse box. Your owners manual will tell you what locations.
I suspect the wires you tied to aren't hooked to anything and you can find the other ends poking out of the harness in the engine compartment near the driver's side. These are there for whatever you want to use them for without the hassle of getting wires through the firewall.
Since you got the towing package there should be the plug you need hiding under the dash... mine was attached to a bar far to the right of the area accessed when you take the fuse panel door off.
Did you buy the truck used? Some people buying used trucks have found that the previous owner's cut the plug off for some reason.
Also make sure you have the trailer tow battery charge, and trailer tow brake relays and fuses installed under the hood. They should be listed in your owner's guide.
Mine had the plug however I also found the 4 wires that matched. they do nothing.
My plug was behind the cup holder/ash tray. pinned down to a small cross member type brace...
Also Save your self a ton of agervation....
on the rear plug Pull the inside wireing harness, Check to see if all pins are still in tact.
I had one that was croaded...this drove me nuts till I finley found the problem.
