new truck...

hi i am looking at getting a 2000 f250 7.3 6speed with 160k on it for $7800. it would mainly be used for daily driving with towing my boat on the weekends mainly.

under the hood looks really clean. no signs of leaks. intercooler clamps felt tight. oil looked good. coolant looked good, no build up in resivoir. couple months ago water pump was replaced. along with ball joints and front left wheel bearing. and the rear diff. cover that had a rust hole. otherwise underbody was suprisingly clean. oil pan either looked to be recently painted, or looks good still.

interior looks pretty good for 160k.

it has some body issues, a couple small dents around nothing big it was a work truck. and around the rear fenders, the bed rails and the right rear window has paint chipped. a little surface rust around fenders from chips. the guy painted over the bed rails where paint was chipped with a green that is a little lighter in color than the green on the truck.

if i got the truck i would want the body fixed up a bit... i would bet the whole bed would need paint. anyone have experience with this.. how much?

i figure if i got the truck for some where around 7500 seems fairly cheap. kelly blue book is about 10k for mileage and in fair condition. figure if i stuck maybe 2k to fix it up be a good deal still??? then who knows how much i would stick into other mods anything im missing to look at? or any other input would be great.

thanks for the help

Sounds like a good deal. Before you give him a check, start the truck up cold, remove the oil fill cap, and sit and watch to see if the vapor coming out is puff puff puff puff or a constant mist. Mist=good, puff=bad.

Get a flashlight and crawl up on top of the motor and look down in the valley (on top of the motor between the heads) Look for signs of leaks there. These leaks usually aren't a big deal to fix, but you'll want to know about them before they get worse.

With the engine running, take the oil cap off and look for smoke (blowby) coming out of the tube. A little smoke is ok, puffing like a steam engine means get ready for a new motor.

Inspect the lid on the air filter box and make sure it looks like it seals good to the box. Unclamp the lid and peek down inside that hose with your flashlight. If you see signs of dust inside the tube, I'd pull the intake tube off the turbo and inspect the wheel. If the edges of the fins aren't straight and sharp (looks like they were hit lightly with a sand blaster), or if you have any in and out movement on the wheel (a little side to side is ok as long as it doesn't touch the housing), then you might be needing a new turbo soon.

well, i am going to get the truck. only problem getting it is the guy im buying it from hit a deer with his car and i have to wait until it gets fixed then i can get the truck. he said it would make it worth my while for waiting, so we'll what that will be.

otherwise i did all the inspecting i could on it and it looks good. obviously you never know buying a used truck and with 160k on it.

i have been reading over these forums for quite a while about all the mods and the capabilities of these trucks. pretty much right away i plan on getting the 6637 filter and soon exhaust for it. i live in wisconsin and have lots of road salt, is it worth it getting stainless exhaust, or i have heard people using stove paint to paint the exhaust. how well does this hold up and is it worth the savings? later on down the road, we will see how long it lasts but i know i wont hardly be able to wait to get gauges and a DP tuner

thanks for all the helpful info

Sounds like a great deal. FYI: I have seen beds on craislist in great condition for $350 bucks. Alot of people buy these trucks and put flat beds on them and sell the stock bed for cheap because of how hard it is to store it. I would keep and eye on your local Auto sale paper for a good bed.

Look at that oil pan real close. A painted oil pan can hide some rust spots.

Try to have it scanned with a PSD compatible scantool.

My 2 cents.

well i got the truck last week and so far so good! got her for $7k. i have gotten one tank of fuel through it and i pulled 16.5mpg. that was a mix of highway and city, and i wasnt driving it that hard. i am happy with that as i was getting about 10mpg in my 93 f150.

my 6637 filter should be here withing the next day or so, cant wait for that. sometime in the next month or so i plan on getting exhaust and i should be satisfied for now for mods....eventually get gauges and a DPtuner.

anyone have line x on the truck? are they pretty much the best? im looking to get the bed, over the rails and im thinking along the bottom of the truck around the fenders. anyone have it put on around the fenders and do the bottom of fender? the paint is chipped around the fenders and dont want them to rust so thats part of my plan for prevention and to clean it up. any input on that?

otherwise so far is goin good on the truck. any other little mods or upgrades i can make? ive been reading around on here for a while i think those are the basics at least.

thanks.

Sounds like you're off to a good start. Make sure you change the fluids and filters. They are the lifeblood of the truck. I'd also recommend inspecting the oil pan real close as Robin suggested. If there are ANY signs of rust, get some Por-15 and do the whole pan.

The motor has to come out to replace the oil pan, so it's much better to catch this now if there is a problem beginning.

well i got a chance to put the 6637 on this weekend. its very nice, you can definately hear the turbo better...very nice.

couple other issues the truck has is, the power locks dont work most of the time. i seen the thread on the fix that can be done with taking the motor apart. any tips or input on doing that?
also have an issue with the wipers. hi and lo work fine, but all the intermitent setting only go several inches at a time and doesnt return to correct spot. anyone know about this problem, is it a bad relay or the switch?
lastly, on the clutch pedal there is the rod that the sensor rides on. im pretty sure the sensor is still working fine, but the rod is either broke or came off of what it attatches to. anyone know how that attatches in there, and is it a easy fix because it is a pain in the butt to get up in there.

thanks again.

You'll have to take the actuator (motor) apart to fix the door locks. I just did that this weekend and it's a pain.

Don't know about the wipers.

If your talking about the rid about the size of a pencil coming off the clutch pedal, did it come off the pedal, or come out of the other side? That rod goes into the clutch hydraulics. You need to figure this one out before the clutch stops working. The rod should snap back into the hydraulic cylinder in the firewall, slip back on the **** welded to the clutch pedal and be held in place with the retainer clip, or if the **** broke off the clutch pedal, you could drill a hole in the pedal and use a bolt if you don't want to weld it back together.
