ive got a 95 lightning 5.8l engine that im puting into a 65 f100, and the transmission is just to big for that year of tuck and wont fit. my ? is can i put a AOD behind this engine without there being problems with the computer sense the AOD is not computer operated. any other suggestions would be great also.
i plan on beefing it up if i decide to go that way. i need to find out what kind of a effect its going to have on the computer if i dont have the E4OD hooked up.
As far as the computer goes it will set codes for everything in and on the transmission, solenoids, sensors, ect. It shouldn't cause any engine performance issues.
It may be possible to remove the auto tranny from the computer, but you will need to find someone that has the equipment and the knowledge to do so.
You could look into a stand alone engine controller just to control the engine.
It would be trick if you could make the lightnings trans fit. Sounds like a fun project
ive tried and tried, its just so dam big as well as long. ive been going over this in the slick 60's forum and lightning forum for a while. my next best choice after doing some research would be the AOD its the same length as the new processe tranny that came out of the truck. it beats out the C-6 due to it have the over drive. the draw back of the AOD is im going to have to spend a little extra to make it hold up. does some one make a stand alone computer for this year of engine. its a 95 5.8l out of a lightning. if not i can deal with the computer throwing codes. i talked with nummberdummy and he said that another computer out of a truck with a manual tranny wouldnt work for me, that i would be lucky if i even got it started. ive been researching how to make the computer work as it was attended wich is easy, but now im thinking about changing trannies it makes it tuff.
Couldn't you just use a mass-air Mustang computer (with appropriate MAF and injectors sized for your 351)? Is the Lightning engine SEFI or batch fire? If it's batch fire you'd need to use the Mustang's engine harness as well...
all this time and you are the first one to suggest the conversion. i was reading last night when it clicked that tha mass air conversion would work perfect. now i need to find a good article on how to do it.
