Hey People,
I'm finally starting the process of getting my truck going. One question.....how are the combustion prechambers held in place? Two of the ones on the engine I have are not in tight. Need help ASAP!!!!!!!!!
i believe they are held in with an interference fit, i donno about our ford motors but the chevy 6.2s and 6.5s come loose from overheating. i noticed when i rebuilt my 7.3 i had the heads milled and each prechamber had what looked like a ***** punch mark on it when i got it back put im not sure y.
They are interference fit. Removal and installation is done with a hammer, brass drift, and lots of care.
Once in the engine, part of the prechamber is pinched between the engine block and the head since it overlaps the fire ring. Are they actually rattling around and fall out by gravity?
haha, wow. just pulled the heads from my 6.9 and I can't wait till they look anywhere close to that clean!...almost every cylinder has THICK carbon build-up...up to 1/10 inch thick on the gaskets...and the heads look like they lost a mud fight with the pistons they're caked so thick
on both of my heads they were loose. Right or wrong, I used a small piece of paper (1/8x1/8" square) between the cup lip and cylinder head. It was just enough to get the head on and once fired up that little bit of paper just decinagrated. DO NOT use grease as this would contanimate the gasket.
oh i know this is over a year old but i did find a page that's got some pictures of the cup installed and removed...could be helpful to someone in the future as it was to me to figure out how to get the darn things out.
At least in this picture with the glow plug installed, you can see where the head gasket fire ring crosses the center of the pre cup when the heads are installed.

I know this post is years old, but how do I remove the prechambers without screwing them up? More information on this procedure would be great. I can't take the head to a machine shop, so I need to do it myself
