More than I spent on my rotating assembly. Really, they aren't all that bad- about $450 or so, but it's more than I got. A rebuilt holley or Edelbrock is more what my wallet can handle. Oh, and I liked your second suggestion a lot, and like I said, we all do it.
I just couldn't let this go unanswered: maybe the 1986-93 Mustang 5.0L and 1979-85 and other Fox chassis w/minor modifications that are listed in the ad?
Bore it as little as necessary to clean up the bores. The machine shop can tell you what that is. Then get a stroker kit with that size pistons. You coulde probably re-use the cam if you keep the lifters in the order they were removed in, but I seriously doubt it would match up well to the motor you will be building even if you don't stroke it and just use the new heads. If you just want a master rebuild kit you can get one from Northern Auto Parts online.
SO when you say get a master rebuild kit am I also going to need to get a stroker kit as well or do they make them as a kit?? Also how bad is this going to kill my fuel economy??? I know I cant have 30mpg and 300 horses but once again I am a poor college kid and cant afford to be driving a truck that gets like 4mpg. It will be my daily driver from about Thanksgiving to Easter because I go to school in Minnesota and the mustang doesnt do so well in the snow.

Either master engine kit is pretty comparable. I personally like the Northern kit because of the ease of upgrading parts and the way it is set up for ordering. You could probably do the same thing with the other kit, but it would take some emailing back and forth. Remember that you have to know what size parts you need first. You could buy .030 oversize pistons and .010 bearings and just have the parts machined to fit, but if for some reason your parts won't machine to that size, you will have to ship stuff back and forth and that's not fun. I have done some business with Northern (bought a cam kit off ebay) I emailed them about upgrading the melling chain kit that came with it and bought the Cloye's upgrade they offered. I got the wrong one, (not their fault) and they offered to exchange for the right one for the cost of shipping. Just so you don't make the same mistake- you need a chain set for a 2 pc. fuel pump eccentric. I've never done business with Falcon. BTW- Considering the cost of the chain against the shipping, I just decided to hang on to the 1 I bought accidentaly and maybe sell it. The Cloye's upgrade isn't a bad idea for your build either. Actually all the upgrades are good, it just depends on what you have to spend. And don't forget the $2.50 cam upgrade. I have one of those cam and lifter kits for sale, but I figure by the time you buy a kit without it, pay the shipping on the kit and the shipping for the cam kit from me, you wouldn't save anything. What are your plans for the intake?
Machine shop prices can vary quite a bit by location and quality of the work. My best advice is to call another one or two to get something to compare to. It's been a while since I had some work done and all I've checked on so far for my next build is head work and balancing. I usually get a quote for everything on the block at once as well. Cleaning, manufluxing, new cam bearings, frost plugs, and boring/honing. Then decking or line boring are usually quoted later if needed.
