You guys are crazy. There is no such thing as a purely mechanical 4-wheel-drive system on a truck anymore. Every single truck on the dealer lot will have electronics built into the system...shifter in the floor or not.
Not having to get out of the truck is smart....not lazy. I think you guys with the manual hubs are just jealous. I'm NOT trying to start a war here...I've owned manual hubs before too. I'm just giving my .02 cents..that's all.
When I twist my hub selectors that are directly attached to the axle and then pull on the lever that is solidly mounted to the transfer case, I'm not using a completely mechanical four wheel drive system? Maybe it's the electrical connection that is making the grinding gears sound....
Us mechanical guys are not jealous at all. We have our mechanical things for a reason. These manual trucks have no electronics, the NEW ones do but the trucks we're talking about are 96 and lower. Manual everything is much more reliable and much stronger. I don't mind getting out of my truck and locking the hubs. Most of us switched from auto to manual, so how are we jealous? We had what you had but changed to manual..... All you do is lock them when you anticipate the use of 4x4, it's not like u have to get out and walk in the mud. You can still shift on the fly so to me theres no negatives to it.
Primary rig is Green Thunder:
95' F-150 XLT 4x4, 302, 5 spd, MSD 6A, Flowmaster Exhaust, Sunroof, Clear corners w/ Diamond headlights, CD player with 2 10" subs and some 32" BFG Muds .
My old 88 bronco had the push button system. A couple of times I got so mad at it I resorted to unscrewing the motor on the t-case that switches it between 2x4 and 4x4, and turning the slot with a big screw driver every time I wanted it in 4 wheel drive. And you think having to get out and turn the hubs is a chore, try crawling under your truck on the side of the highway in 2 feet of snow....barefoot...for 6 miles...uphill
alright I'll shut up now
