Anyone have any experience with headers for a 4.9? Any pros or cons? I've been kicking around the idea for a couple of days. Who manufactures them?
Thanks, Scott
i tought all 4.9's came with headers from the factory
Uhh, not exactly.
EFI 4.9s have a header-looking pair of 3 into 1 manifolds. Pre EFI engines have a log style one piece exhaust manifold with a single exit.
A real long-tube header vs. the EFI manifolds is quite different.
Clifford and others sell headers.
Main question: Do you have smog inspection? 50 state approved headers may be harder to find.
See the 6 cylinder engine forums for info.
BTW, not a lot to be gained from the EFI motor via header alone. You need to keep the egr and other smog equipment so it will run right. (possible with the right header)
Thanks for the help. I do have to have annual emission inspections so leaving the smog equipment off is not an option. Also, my 95 is EFI equipped. I will check out the 6 cylinder forum and see how I can improve the performance. Thanks again.
I wouldn't bother with them on the 300. The OEM split manifold is just fine. The 4.9 does not move that much air and doesn't really need headers. Opening up the exaust from the manifold back is still a good idea though. The best thing to do for the big I6 is to keep it tuned up and the fluids and filters clean. Although it is a very good engine, its not designed for performance.
