Front end vibration

This just started yesterday. I have a fast vibration coming from the left front. I want to describe it as a grinding vibration, but no grinding noise. It only happens when I'm off the brakes and under 60 mph. I just thought I'd pick your brains, its been raining here so I haven't had a chance to get her on a jack. Thanks.

First thought is wheel bearing, but it may be scalloped tires.

.... or ball joints.

Best bet is to jack up that side, grab the tire and wiggle to see if there is any play. If you do find play, then isolate the source. Watch the ball joints as you wiggle, if they move, there's your problem. If they don't move but the tire still has play, it's the wheel bearing that's toast.

Also don't forget to try the other side too.

If there is no play on either tire, then you may have a tire issue (balancing or whatever else might go wrong), or could be something else related to the suspension or steering.

I had a similar problem. It would always occur at the same speed, 58 mph. It was one of the front tires. Didn't find the problem until we pulled the tires off the wheels. A metal band had come free inside the tire.

Good Luck....

Also could be the needle bearing inside the hub assembly has frozen and created a groove of free-play between it and the axle shaft. I just got done fixing that on my truck.

Let us know what you find.

Thanks guys!
I jacked it up tonight, and the driver side hub was clicking when I spun the wheel. I locked it then unlocked it and so far the vibration has gone away. Not sure exactly what the problem was, but I'm gonna keep my eye on it for awhile. I just did ball joints about a year ago, replaced and relubed everything, and I'm not really looking forward to doing it all again.
