Looking for a source for some tire for my 48' F-1..
I am in Northern Calif.. if anyone knows of a good (and low cost if that is possible) source for tires.. most likely 6.50 x 16 (7.00 x 16 would be a option).
Most of the tire stores don't have any listing for the old Bias ply tires.. and want to sell a Radial tire..
I don't plan on driving a lot or miles, very far from home, nor very fast.. so I am ok with a lower grade tire as this is not trailer queen or show truck.. far from it.
Thanks for the info guys.. I was hoping to get some more local to the San Francisco Bay Area.. I did call Lucas in Long Beach.. and their prices are not bad, but would tack on Tax and Shipping.
I was hoping for a more local source in case there are problems.. I hate spending good money return shipping and the likes..
Tires are one thing I wouldn't either scrimp on, or buy thru the internet (although I have in one case). There is nothing like local service. Some places will also not install or balance tires they didn't sell you, "lawyers say No". I would also insist on the date codes for any of these tires, they are slow movers and likely to have been sitting around a while. You're going to pay taxes no matter what in CA.
I gotta think that some big chain like Les Schwab would have access to vintage tire sizes. I checked Schwab's on-line catalog just now and don't find any listed, but they might have sources that aren't shown there. As I understand Schwab and Commercial Tire pretty much blanket the west coast.
If you're looking for a low priced tire you can try to find a Nanco tire dealer in your area. Beware though that there is a lot of negative information about their camper trailer tires, it seems they had problems with some of the pre-'05 trailer tires. Cheap tires was a subject on the HAMB board quite some time ago and a person local to me mentioned he just bought a set. I found the discussion while searching the HAMB site to see if anyone had experience with Nanco tires, the post was from a year or two ago and I figured it was a long enough time to see what the experience the had with the tires so I emailed the poster to ask about his tires. In his reply he said they were good tires and he didn't have any problems with them. This guy bought them at a local farm supply store.
There is also a guy on eBay that sells them out of Chicago, Gearworks Manufacturing,gearworksmfg.com. If you're looking for low priced tires it's worth looking into.
Thanks for the input guys, but I am not looking for the El Cheapo Tires !.. just a good price and service....
If I put more than a two hundred miles on this truck a year (in its current or planned condition, it is currently a low miles all original Truck that my Uncle had and has been in a garage since 1975 due to the master cyl going bad).. that will be a lot, I don't expect to be going any faster that the posted speed in the city..
I will buy what I need, but as I said, looking for a low cost if possible and good services from the installer..
Lucas might be a good source, They have a LT for $89.00 and be about $53.00 for shipping of 4 tires, I also see that Coker has a 650x16 Tornel 6ply Hyw for $91.00 also. So I will be looking into those two for a starter..
