If your going the cheap route, go with a spool in the rear. I have one in my 9" and it runs great. I just got back from Oreogon and back (500 miles) no problems on the highway. In town is a different story, watch those turns.
New info, I heard another reason why the locker is hard on the snow/ice is because if it's unlocking and locking while turning, it makes it very unpredicatable and thus hard to control. Is that true? If so, then an LS wouldn't be so bad in the front.

why are u all comparing a different lockers and ls' to use up front for street use? it shouldn't matter right? u don't drive on the street with ur hubs locked do u? if this is the case, couldn't u just put a mini spool up front and locker in the back?
Because when you drive in a snow storm, you're on the street arn't you? The hubs will be locked, and the 4x4 will be needed from time to time. We do drive on the street with the hubs locked when the use of 4x4 is anticipated, and 4x4 is needed sometimes.
