Hey! I have been a stalker in this forum for months. I have learned alot as to what to look for in an IDI from here, and I picked one up! 1992 F-350 Crewcab! Its a beast, and as I have read here the turning radius of a jetliner is about right for this truck.... But, now to my problem.
I can accelerate, Full, half, quarter etc throttle and the truck shifts 1 2 4 with the TC Locked. it then unlocks and then downshifts to third picks up some more speed and goes back to 4 Unlocked this time, then it locks up. Strange I know... But... What is really annoying is that the TC locks and unlocks every second or two, I can tell by a small (250RPM) change. I dont mind the strange shifting for now, but going up HWY 36 to Boulder here in colorado with that TC doing its thing can get really annoying. I have tried the resetting of the computer by unplugging the batteries for about an hour. That didnt change much of anything actually.
Advice on what to check and how to check it would be appreciated. Mabey the throttle position sensor? Random guess...
Check your brake lights/tail lights for good grounds. Ramdom light voltage coming back up the brake light circuit tells the PCM your appling the brakes-and unlocks the torque converter. Easiest and cheapest thing to check first. Beyond that, check the electrical plugs for corrossion or loose connections, especially the one on the pass side of the tranny, behind the heat sheild,(which needs to be reinstalled). Also a Ford code reader for these trucks is only about $30, good idea to have one and check the code's, will save a ton of time and money in locating an actual problem.
since it is a 92 there are most likely no codes in the system or the O/D cancel light would be flashing
if it is skipping third gear and cycling the tcc, the fipl (tp) sensor is the most likely problem especially if the sensor is black in color that would make it an early style and would be well beyond its useful life span , other than that a vehicle speed sensor in the rear axle
I will have to crack the hood open to see the FIPL. That is in the IP housing correct? I have read the TSB regarding the old black ones. And I also have read how to check it. Just need to know where it is located. Would a bad speed sensor in the axle affect the speedometer as well? I am not having issues with that. Or is this normal with the speedo's cable running to the transmission?
Yes, it could (and should) affect your speedometer as well since 1992 has a sensor driven speedo instead of the older cable driven ones. The sensor for throttle position is not inside the injector pump, its bolted to the side of it on the driver's side.
the speedo will not necessarily have an issue with a bad speed sensor , the speedo filters out a lot to make the needle smooth but the pcm is sensitive to erratic vss signals
Ok the FIPL was replaced. 1.1 Volt at idle 4.? WOT. Still doing the same thing. The shifting is normal, 1-2-3-4 but the TC likes to lock or unlock whenever the hell it feels like. Tach seems to be normal. Am I correct in thinking that I need to try a new speed sensor? I would like to be able to test things before just blindly replacing parts. After I replaced the FIPL, it stopped for about a week, but now it is back with a vengeance. Still not throwing any codes. Any advice from here?
My 90 started with the T/C unlocking and locking at random, I checked the FIPL and the voltage was right, put on a new one and the problem went away, check the voltage on the FIPL, 1.1 at idle to 3.9/4.0 at wide open.
