Post Dana 21 transfer case

I have a dana 21 transfer case in my 71' f-100 4x4. It is mated to a np 435 manual transmission. The dana 21 is a single speed tcase. Does anyone know the ratio? And is this a good tcase for running in the mud? What other tcase options do I have for the np 435? Thanks JP

The Dana 21 is a 1:1 transfer. It has no low range. You should be alright in the mud especially if you have a fairly strong motor. I used to use 2nd gear most of the time for mud; you can get decent wheel speed w/o bogging the motor. You can use the granny gear as well but your wheel speed will be pretty low. The lack of a low range hurts you more on technical stuff like off camber climbing and rock crawling than in mud.

I figured with that trans/t-case combo, your granny 1st would be your low range...

The '21 is a fairly weak transfer case, but you might as well run it untill you blow it. The Dana 24 is a strong, gear driven unit comparable to the venerable 205. Some guys shy away from the '24 because they aren't as familiar with them, but they are very similar to the 205 and just as strong. The 3/4 fords had the Dana 24s untill about '72 when they switched to the np205s. Both are great transfer cases, although the 205s are more common.

yeah, What Proeliater sayed.
Since you already have a married set-up with the D21 you won't find a married D24. only NP-205 came married behind a NP-435 in Ford. You need the adaptor and stub shaft. You will need to find out if the output shaft of the Np-435 with the D21 is the same as the output in a NP-435 with the NP-205. If not,you can find a '77 1/2-'79 F-150/F-250 or Fullsize '78/'79 Bronco. This will have a Np-435/Np-205 combo. Some may have a T-18 but most will Np-435. This will bolt up to your motor without any problems. Crossmember modification and driveshaft work should be the extent of the other mods.
