Alrighty, I bought a 1992 F150 not too long ago. Perfect fit, I needed a truck with out a payment.
So we're out getting firewood there today and I look under and see the front of the tranny leaking. So I got about 1/2 way home before it was done and I got to walk the rest of the way home.
Now, I'm thinking that it was caused by rubbing going through a cross ditch. I did some damage to the front end on this trip too. Is it possible to do this through physical damage or not? Would it be the front seal?
Sounds like it got hot, real hot. That or you ruptured one of the line going to the rad/trans cooler.
Lines look okay. Went back out to the truck, filled it full of fluid and off we went. No real leakage, some, until it got hot again. Then it started to much more noticeably.
Where is it leaking at?
If it is coming out of the bell housing area it would have to be the front pump transmission seal. I would pull the pump off and replace the bushing and the seal.
Is your rear engine seal leaking oil from the same area also?
At first I thought it was coming out of the donut type thing. Mmmm donut...
Then, I looked a little closer and see that it appears to be dripping down to the donut area from here. For reference, the top of the picture is the engine oil pan.
Just by looking at the lower image, the leak involved in that picture almost looks like it is a rear main engine seal weeping a bit. On the upper photo, where the mmm donut thingy is, just below that on the image is a notch in the tourque converter cover. chances are your pump seal has had it. In my past experiences, there is more chance that is the spot the red fluid would be coming from and it would be blowing back from there as you drive, wetting everything from that point back. Run your finger up on that rear main seal just to be sure it is not motor oil.

So it would appear that I have two leaks then. One engine oil at the rear main seal, and one tranny. Good Times.
How much work is it to change the tranny pump seal?
Easier to change both the engine seal and transmission seal at the same time. You will need to remove the transmission to change the pump seal and that will give you better room to take the oil pan off the engine to change the rear main block seal. I have to ask though. is your transmission an AOD? I had one of those do exactly the same thing and failed hard on me about 4 months after I heated it up. Replaced it with a trusty C6

Not much, just drop the transmission, pop out the seal, and drive in the new seal.
While the transmission is out you might as well do the rear engine seal at the same time along with the main engine bearings. The bearing more than likely has let the crankshaft drop down and let the seals leak. You would also want to replace the transmission front pump bushing at the same time.
Some times it easier to just pull the engine, pull the transmission front pump and do the engine at the same time while it is on the engine stand.
That is the way I did my 88.

Oh Boy, I know bugger all about this truck besides it's a '92 and it was a thousand bucks and it likes gas stations. It has automatic with an overdrive
