Oil Pump

I have a 95 150 5.0 farm truck. It leaked oil from the oil pan very bad. I pulled the engine and replaced the oil pump ( just because the engine was out) and replaced the oil pan gasket. After putting the engine back in the it has no oil pressure. When replacing the oil pump I only removed the bolts and gaskets and put the new one in. Should have I primed the pump in some way? Is there any way to prime the pump without pulling the engine again? Is there some other reason I am not getting any oil pressue. The engine is chattering very bad. I only ran it for about 30-45 seconds. Do I need to let it run longer for the pump to operate? any replies is great. Thanks in advance!!!

DO NOT restart it and let it run long if you have no oil pressure, or you will no longer have an engine.

When you replaced the oil pump did you make sure the drive shaft went into the bottom of the distributor. A way to check if it's in the right place or the prime it with out starting the engine is to take out the dizzy. the oil pump drive shaft should be in the circle at the bottom of the dizzy hole. To prime it you'll need the right size socket for the oil pump driveshaft, a drill, and extensions.

pull the distributer (sp) and make up a tool to prime the pump using a drill. Always fill the new pump with oil and turn it by hand to suck oil up. One time i did not do that on a chevy and i put 2 xtra qts of oil and the pump primed. Not the way to do it but if u do not feel like pullin dist u could give it a try. just drain off xtr oil after u get pressure

How are you measuring oil pressure. Stock gauge? Did oil sender down near pan between timing cover and oil filter become unplugged, or wire broken while replacing pump and pan.

check your sensor real quick, theres no reason to fret over something until youve checked the simple things first.

learned awhile ago to check the simple inexpensive things first before you get mad and break things causing great expeditures

The OP said himself he did not prime the new oil pump. That is definitely a problem. The distributor needs to come out so that it can be primed.

What the gauge says doesn't matter. If it's chattering "very bad" then it's pretty obvious it's not getting any oil. Like others have said, you have to prime a new oil pump with a drill. It's not hard to do, but it is a necessary step.
