Can't find !@$@!@ coolant temp sensor

Gosh darn, I cant find the coolant temp sensor and need some help.

I thought it was behind the alternator, removed it and the sensor, and dangit its not the right one.

My haynes says its to the left front of the intake manifold. I cant find it anywhere.

Can someone please help me with details and maybe a picture? I am at a loss where it could be.

Its a 2000 expedition, 5.4l v8.

Thanks for helping out!

It is actually a cylinder head temp sensor. IIRC it is on the passenger side head

On the same note, the reason I am replacing it, is that as soon as I start the truck, the temp guage is buried all the way on hot, and the car wont run right. The car is cold, because this happens when I first go to start it, not after driving it.

Could it be something else? The parts store was showing a coolant temp sensor for my year and engine, but I just cant find it anywhere.

just to follow up with the resolution to this........

I could not find the ect sensor anywhere. Apparantly, the parts store says there is one for this car, but I couldn't find it, anywhere that it is supposed to be.
I ended up changing the cylinder head temp sensor. It was located on the front of the engine, toward the middle, behind the alternator. replacing this fixed the problem i was having. Now the car temp shows normal, and the car starts up and runs normally.

Before changing it, starting the car the temp guage was past hot, and the car ran very rough, practically not at all. It also threw a code about the engine block overheating. Now all is good.

Thanks for eveyones suggestions/help with this.

Glad you had the issue licked. Parts available at parts store or dealer only? How much? You have the part #?

I remembered when I replaced my t-stat at about 100k, I tried in vain to look for CTS and just gave up (T-stat + CTS change is a habit I have being a FWD Volvo enthusiast). Speaking of which, if you have over 100k and last time t-stat was replaced is unknown, it's not a bad thing to replace it next time you change your coolant.

Sometime when a part cannot be found on a vehicle it helps to go and buy it first. This way you can see what it looks like.

I did have the part, and my haynes manual, and its impossible to find on my 2000.
One of the techs on here said I dont have a coolant temp sensor, only a cylinder head temp sensor on my vehicle. That is what I replaced.

I looked at the left front of the intake, as my manual suggested, and on the passenger side head, and between the coilpacks, and my truck just doesn't have one anywhere you can see from the top of the engine.

Mine is a 2000 5.4l 4x4 automatic.

Glad Im not the only one who can't find it!

Funny, Advance auto showed a coolant sensor, but showed no cylinder head temp sensor for the 2000 engine. After looking all the way up to 2003, the 2003 data showed a CHTS. So, they did not have the right info at all.

Napa showed both a coolant sensor and cylinder head sensor for my year. Since it was Sunday I could not call the dealer to get more part info. Napa wanted my left nut for the part. it was $49, but at that point I was glad just to have the right part.
