Ok, Ive got a 96 f-250 2wd with a 6inch lift and 36's
I have an open rear diff in it right now, which isnt making me too happy so I want to put a locker in
I have the gigantic sterling 60 12 bolt rear end in this bad boy so I figure I wont be breaking it any time soon.
I want to put a detroit locker in it, so its alway engaged, I dont really care if it rides like #####, I have super swampers on it right now which hum like a ****** f$cker. I figured I may as well re gear it too since I have stock gears with 36's right now. Can anyone tell me how hard it is to put a locker in..... should I have it professionally done?
also, where should I buy one online?
if anyone has advice on a different type of locker Id be open to install, but I know that the detroit is known as pretty much the strongest
if you have a sterling, its called a sterling 10.25...for it's 10.25 inch ring gear(could be 10.5 if its outta a superduty). Anyway, the detroit for it is one of the most expensive.....usually 5-600 bucks. YOu should look at having it professionally installed most likely. Unless you know how to remove the carrier, ring and pinion, put the ring gear on the detroit, put the pinion back set pinion preload, backlash, and proepery shim to get that perfect pattern. I know i left out details, but thats a good overview. With 36's and no overdrive, 4.10 gears are about perfect. And no, i doubt you will ever break the 1.5 inch 35 spline shafts in that sterling...but anything can be broken with too much skinny pedal at the wrong time
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 19-Dec-02 AT 00:33 AM (EST)]screw a locker weld the rear its full time and its alot cheaper
just remember never weld the front end unless its purely a mud bogg truck ..........do you have a 351w or a 460 in your truck?
chances are you already have a 4.10-4.11 gear ratio in your truck
and if you do it wont take you hardly any money at all to get your rear the way you want it
If you drive more than 50 miles a year on paved roads don't weld up the spider gears. Yeah it's cheaper, unless you do a Miller Locker instead of a Lincoln Locker(haha). Sometimes you can even get a real strong lockup that will last forever, but i've seen welded gears fail and it's ugly. You'll be stuck wherever you are after the sparks stop flying and the grinding settles.
You can buy a spool on ebay- I've seen them for a little over a hundred bucks- if you think you need full time 2wd. IMHO go with the strong, dependable, proven Detroit Locker.
