I am rebuliding a 460. it's torn down and ready to go to the machine shop. My buddy helping me with the rebuild says i wont be happy with anything LESS then 10:1. My machine shop tells me that that high a compression will take away from the trucks offroad performance and he recommends i go no higher then 8.9:1. What does the offroading community think?
Also, my machine shop is telling me I wont be able to run regular octain gas with a high compression engine.
Tell me what you know, and what you have done.
Thanks, Ivan
With a 460, 8.9:1 is great. You will have better power, and be able to run whatever you want in it for gas. Much more than 9.2:1 on that engine, and you will need premiuim. Go to 10:1+, and you will be on a first-name basis with the local race-gas supplier. Put an aftermarket aluminum intake on it, one of those Truck Avenger 670cfm 4BBL's would probably be great on it, and maybe open up the prots a little. Even on a stock rebuild, this will make tons of power.
