ON the pass. side you could move the spring purch. on the driver side the purch is machined into the diff housing. You could make a new purch and weld it onto the tube right next to the diff. But the distance between spring centers from the 78/79 and the 86/98 D60's may only mean having 1/2 of a new purch and being partial on the old one. For the effort and money just get the correct one. The newer D60's run cheaper than the 78/79's anyway since there are more of them and the earlier ones go for big bucks for those doing swaps in earlier Fords and swaping into other makes of 4x4's.
Just remember when looking for a 86/98 D60, sometime in the early 90's they went from Kingpin and Balljoints.
I am in the process of modifying a 77 D44HD for my 84 F-250. I did a search for axle perches, and came up with a bunch of Jeep sites, where the guys made their own perches. I am using 3" square tube, cutting the 2 5/8" radius on one side, and then cutting a flat on the other to fit over the existing perches. It will require using two different sizes of u-bolts on the pass side, but as my old shop teacher used to say, we have the technology. Just make sure that when you cut the flat that rests on the old perch, you do it perfect. A good working knowledge of torches, and access to a u-bolt bending press makes it much easier, too. Also, make sure you burn in the welds properly, or they can shear off. To adjust the camber, Summit sells corrector shims, in 2* increments. I would worry about the camber first, then if the pinion angle is off, address that later.
