C6 transmission interchangeability?

I'm sure there is a post about this somewhere, but I searched and couldn't find one. I've got a '76 F-150 with a 390 and C6 tranny. The tranny is shot and I'd like to replace it. My question is what years of truck should I be looking for to get a transmission from? Did the C6 change from year to year or will they all fit?

Any FE block C6 will work.

Dang..if you were closer, I have a C-6 from a 74 that had a 390..you could have it. I just got another 74 with a 460, so I have an extra trans. that I don't have any use for. Up for a road trip? lol

Check the tail shaft for length. Late 60's and early 70's trucks had a short tailhousing with a fixed yoke on them instead of a shaft for a slip joint. Probably doesn't need to be said but 4X4's had a different output shaft also.

I know they include the 360, 390 and 428, any tranny pulled from behind one of those engines will work.
A passenger car trans will not be the same as an F100/350, and without making labor intensive changes, one can't use a 1968/72 F100/350 C6 in a 1973/76 F100/350.
No 428's were ever factory installed in F100/350s = 1966/70 cars only.

All the cars use different output shafts and extension housings, which are specific to each model. The slip yoke will not be the same.

The 1968/72 F100/350 C6's also use a different extension housing & output shaft.

The correct answer is 1973/76 F100/350 360/390 C6. 2WD will not be the same as 4WD. No 390's were installed in 1968/76 F100/250 4WD's.

I believe that you were just stating what the FE engines are, and he corrected you that 428s never came in trucks, right?

the numbers may prove me wrong but it seems like most FE motors came with 4spds, unless they were in a car, which wouldnt work anyway... a C6 core is $900.. so if i was you id just have the thing rebuilt... not much more, and it will be a brand new, if not better tranny.

While there is no production breakdowns available, from decoding over 600 Warranty Plates on FTE, over 35 years spent behind Ford parts counters, I'd be willing to bet that most FE engines in trucks came with automatics (especially after 1972), with the 3 speed manual second, the two different 4 speeds: New Process 435 = third, and Warner T-18 = fourth.

High Boy engine choices (Since some peeps call 1967/72's High Boys, I'm including them. Originally the term was coined to refer to 1973/77.5's only).

1967: The 240 was standard, the 300 and 352 were optional.

1968/74: The 240 was standard, the 300 and 360 were optional.

1975/76: The 300 was standard, the 360 was optional.

1977: The 300 was standard, the 351M and 400 were optional.

240 dropped after 1974, no 390's were factory installed in 1968/76 4WD's.

And...in case someone asks...no 460 4WD's till 1983. No 460 4 speed manuals till 1983.

Ok so if I've been reading correctly, a C6 out of a 78 F-250 4x4 and a 460 should work for me. Correct?

Read again, a 460 is not an FE block motor. Little late, didn't see the next page.

by the time you go and find a junkyard tranny, pull it out, replace your existing one and hope the junkyard one works, I think you would be time and money ahead by just having your existing tranny rebuilt.

That way you would get a warranty and know that you have something that is going to last.

That's my 2 cents.
