A couple of months ago I had a bunch of work done on my 6.0 under warranty. EGR cooler, oil cooler both replaced and some other work as well. I was losing coolant to the tune of about 1/2" per day dropping in the deguass bottle. Truck had no power and was getting about 6 mpg. Anyway I'm still suspicious of the heads and I'm keeping a close eye on my coolant levels. In the meantime someone on this great site suggested I install a bypass filter from Dieselsite. I did and today I changed my first filter after 1000 km. I couldn't believe the crap that came out of that filter. I cut it open to see for myself. I poured out the coolant left in filter. It was full of black sediment and there was grit and slime between the fins of the element. I don't sell easily on new products. My engine is pretty much stock and will probably stay that way, but I'm impressed with this product and thought I'd share. Most of the time all you hear about is the bad stuff, but not the case hear. Dieselsite filter, lots of bang for the buck.
It's driving much better now. Has its power back and the mileage is up 16 - 17 around the city. As for the sediment....I was pretty surprised as to the amount. It was as much as you'd get from the left over grounds from making a pot of coffee.
Glad to hear it's running better. Mine wasn't that much but I haven't changed the second one yet. I'll probably do that in the next couple of weeks. Did you have head gaskets replaced? You should have gone back in with head studs!
It's a great mod. I had a bunch of crud in my first filter. The second and third filter changes have produced a little dirt but not much. I really believe this mod will greatly reduce oil and egr cooler failures (for those of us who don't delete egr coolers).
okay, i'm sold....you gonna help put one on mine Jonathan?
Sure! If you help me with my balljoints!! LOL. We went to Palm Springs this past weekend.... and took the back way through Cima and Kelso. With all the pot holes and bumps in the road, and the Sidewinder (really! Didn't hit it though) I think my front end needs some attention! What a rough road. I'm just messing around, the balljoints are still ok.
In order for two people to do this job, one has to hold and drink the 12 pack while the other does the work!!
Quite right. Only took me two beers, and that includes himming and hawing for several minutes about the best place to cut the hose coming out of the heater core. It was getting dark so I had to step on it!

Still got the original heads and gaskets. The tech was looking at replacing if the work they did didn't get it running right. I'm keeping a close eye on my level, smoke, power and mileage and if they're getting done, I'm going with the ARP studs.
Question about installing the Coolant filter. If I throw one on now after having 127K on the truck, how much of the cooler system is already blocked?? The filter will catch what is floating through the sys but wont help in removing what is already plugged.
Is there any way to clean/ flush the sys then install the filter?
I'm no expert but, I think it wouldn't do any harm. If you're not having any overheating problems yet, I think it could only improve things by removing the sediment that is loose.
