Amp gauge
I pulled my instrument panel out (53 F100) and noticed that the amp gauge is pegged at the high end. :- Never noticed it before, so don't know if I did something when I took it out or what.
Any thoughts are appreciated.
Those gauges were very delicately built and the needle "floats" on a stem. They can be easily jarred out of position.
To check, unscrew the gauge from the instrument cluster by removing the two slotted screws on th eback of the cluster holdin git in. GENTLY lift the gauge out of the instrument cluster housing. The gauge doesn't have an independent glass face. You should be able to touch the needle. It is VERY frail. Very gently see if you can get it to "pop" back into postion in the center by lightly tapping in that direction. If it goes, it should jump back into position.
You can also remove the face of the gauge by prying slightly on the sides of the face in the two indentations that are bent over the case. When you lift off the face be sure to slide it up and away from the base of the needle so you don't bend the needle up. Look for any burns. You will be able to see where the needle base is supposed to fit. Put it back in place, then replace the face and install the gauge.
Good Luck,
J!
