Was sitting on a work location idling engine to keep cool and noticed my battery light come on. Batt gauge stayed about 3/4 where it always is. Looked at my digital gauge and it was reading 12.2 v, not good. Ended up getting a new alternator and the stupid gauge still reads the same as always - useless. Thank goodness for the light since I probably would have run the battery down and killed the engine without even realizing why.
Yes the stock gauge just reads votlage in the system. Found out the hard way myself. When it goes down the alternator has already stopped working way before. Its not like the old days when it shows charging or not charging its system voltage.

Did yours shut down when the voltage got too low? Just wondering what might have happened if I didn't notice. As luck would have it, I just got 2 new batteries under warranty from Wallyworld. One was bad but they replaced both. Could have been the cause of the alt failing but after 273000 miles I can't complain.

Yes they will shut down eventually. I didn't notice it at first and shut it down. Couldn't put the windows up at first, then it worked. Came back to it and it wouldn't start. Charged them up ran a little while, recharged then ran it to it stopped. I was way out so had know choice. It stopped in the drive way at Ford a long way from home. Pushed it in, changed the alternator and charged the batteries. They said I need new ones but they ran two more years before I had to replace. Thats how I found out how the gauge worked. Good luck, Chet
