Does anyone here do Truckpulling???

I was just wondering if anyone here did any truckpulling? Not the highperformance super street stock or mod stock, just plain old stock. I know that guys always want to improve their trucks, and say that they are still sock, but I mean true production, if the truck came that way run it, stock! There are some good clubs in Ohio and I was wondering if any one had gone to their pulls. I have a '97 F-350 4x4 with a 460 auto and want to get into pulling. You know just add a front weight rack and a reese hitch, and go pull. Hopefully get to the 300' mark and take home a trophy or mabye some money. I have watched my brother, he's got a '99 F-350 auto with a 7.3 powerstroke. He does really well, and I can't wait to see how my truck runs. Let me know what you guys think of this sport. I used to 4by all the time with my first truck '77 F-250 D60 front and rear, 390 4spd and 35" swampers. Kick *** good time, just to much work always washing the truck, getting all of the acreage off of it. This site is awesome, and it is good to hear that Ford Motor Co. is now a sponsor. Congrats to all who make it happen.

I myself don't pull, but I will tell you it's gonna take a lot more than just a weight rack and a hitch. If you're gonna be good at it, you have to make sure everything is in top shape and run a gear ratio some where in the 5.56 range, as well as some internal engine modifications, as the EFI 460's in our trucks are not known for their horsepower, but they have excellent potential to be a real powerhouse with the right combination of goodies. Pulling trucks also take a real beating, make sure you have something else to drive if something happens to give. Good luck with your project.

Taking a trophy with a 460 would take some serious engine mods, or for the other guy's to brake down. Dont get me wrong, I'm not trying to bash you or your truck, but most, if not all, them pullers are diesels. It takes some serious torque to get that far. It's not all about high revin ponies....all though they do help alot!

I have done a bit of street-stock truck pulling with my bone stock '97 F-350 460 5spd and for $20-40 it's a great time. I will have to agree with the others on the subject of winning, though. Unless there are very strict rules about stock condition (which wouldn't be much fun in my opinion), you won't likely win too many pulls. Most of the street stock pulls I have competed in had rules that would allow significant engine, suspension, and tire changes from stock as long as the vehicle was road-worthy. I usually finish about mid-pack when I pull. I get beat by the guys that are hopped up. Many of them are probably cranking 400+ horsepower and most run a good mud tire. I do fare pretty well against most of the guys that are actually running pretty close to factory stock and when I finally get the truck paid for maybe I can do some mods myself and get truly competitive. Good luck to you! As I mentioned before, win, lose, or draw, it's a fair amount of fun and something I would recommend you try at least once just to see what it's like.

There is a guy that goes by the name of Shazaam in the 351C/M/400 forum that has an 800HP 400 block. He uses it exclusively for pulling. Any questions, this guy can answer.

I pulled my truck once. I ended up placing right in the middle of the pack, about the only reason that I placed that good is because of locker. I know it wasn't because of the motor. But around here they have a EFI/diesel class. The only trucks that can pull must run EFI(gassers), castiron exhaust manifolds(gassers), stock intake manifold, no full lift kits but you can run frontend leveling kits, no slipper clutchs, must have cats (gassers), no traction bars, no weight bars on front, can place weights in the bed, and must have DOT tires. The diesels usually out pull the gassers (most of the time by 20-30 ft), I think that it has to do with all that weight over the front tires. I have a buddy that pulls in the street stock carb class. He runs a 460 that is far from stock. Roller drive train, huge cam, lockers front and rear, headers, and the list goes on. Dynoed at 470+ hp, but still is able to pull in the stock class. Figure that out?? And there are guys that have more than him in the stock class.

I truck pull in the street stock class. With a 80 chevy 1 ton. That 454 puts out about 475 horsepower. Where I pull the only limitations are no tires bigger thatn 33x12.50x16.5. We can run aluminum heads and intakes. Whick i run neither. I run all cast iron with alot of machining. And alot of bucks. You are looking at a very expensive sport to get into, I always wanted to do it. Now that I am I have to keep forking out the dough to keep competitive. I am now building up a 76 F250 hi-boy to run in the stock class. All I have to say is in all the pulls I have either pulled in or attended your best bet is you shouls have kept your old mudder and made it into a puller. Older trucks tend to do alot better and are reasonably cheaper to work on and get performance parts for. Good luck. Make sure you buy stock in Spicer as well. Get the biggest set of U-joints that you can to fit your drivetrain.
