4x2 Off Roader or Street Machine?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 02-Jan-03 AT 08:29 PM (EST)]I am looking into a 84 F-150 Longbed V8, Manual trans., (don't know which V8 yet) that is two wheel drive. I was wondering, assuming I get it, would it be better to raise the the whole truck (put bigger tires on, etc.) and make it a "pre-runner" or drop the front and raise the back and make it a show/street machine. I know in the end it's up to me, but I'd just like to hear other people's thoughts on a potential project truck like this. Just gets me excited thinkin' about it.

maybe you should just go for a 4x4? If you havent bought it yet. You could make a decent offroader with a 4x2 but 4x4 is always better.

Fords with the TIB front end are very easy t get LOTS of wheel travel out of... If you would actually use it as a pre-runner, I vote pre-runner, if not, and, it's in decent shape, convert it to 4x4(bolt in job.) These trucks don't deserve to get lowered....

It would actually be a gift from a relative, so that's why I'm thinking. But what I was meaning by "street machine" was that I could lower the front 2" and raise the back 2" to give it a more aggresive stance and build up the motor. You probably know what I mean. But on the other hand, I could have way more fun with it raised up and not worry about tearing up my '95. But I still would appreciate any further suggestions and/or ideas.

4x2 Off Roader or Street Machine?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 04-Jan-03 AT 02:46 AM (EST)]Well to make that truck a pre-runner, here is some ideas on what needs to be Done!!!!
1. FenDers that stick out so optimum wheel travel can be attained
2. Fiberglass hood to reduce weight
3. remove tailgate and put you spare tire in a carrier back there
4. Put aan extra 25-35 gallon gas tank in the back preferably Aluminum
5.Remove both front and rear bumpers
6. put a 2-3" lift on it
7. Fox shocks w/ extreme amounts of wheel travel
8. Roll cage (solid metal)
9. Final but not least get as much power out of that engine as possibe
10. Also you will need full skid plates underneath!

P.S. The main thought when building a pre-runner is LOW WEIGHT, LOTS OF WHEEL TRAVEL, AND TONS OF POWER!!!!!

if you lowered the front 2 inches and raised the back 2 it would look supergay. Just do the prerunner deal. Put in a locker in the back and youre golden. or you could always convert to 4x4 like someone already said.

4x2 Off Roader or Street Machine?

One other thought that had come into mind, assuming I get the truck, and this would work with the prerunner or sleeper, was that I could have the tailgate aluminum trim put on, but make it smooth (no colored strip or lettering) and have a Confederate flag and a Ford oval painted on the tailgate panel. I'd like to have the truck painted black, put in a billet grille, straight dual exhaust, American Racing wheels, maybe blackouts for the lights, put new (or used) chrome bumpers on it, and maybe a few other things to make it a go'n'show machine. If it was possible, I'd love to have the best of both worlds (off road & speed), but you have to sacrifice one to get the other. Anyway, I'm just throwing around a few ideas, other ideas are welcome too.

"have a Confederate flag and a Ford oval painted on the tailgate panel." LOL, I didn't think that was still "IN"! They still show the dukes of hazard? Keep it plain and simple, and smoke the heck out of the guy next to you. I'll tell you what though, i had a 79 F100 Ranger with the TTB (4x2), 302, and a lift in the rear, and could follow my buddy's K-5 4x4 w/ 35's and a Toyota DX (puddle skipper). I think either way, it will turn out to be a kick *** looking truck. good luck.
