DAMN these guys are slow I checked in there last week and they were sending the rods out to be machined for the ARP bolts. He said all the machine work on the block was done. I am hoping to have it going when the snow flies, my ranger SUCKS in the snow. Feels like snow could fly soon though its getting cold here in MO!!!
The balance job won't do a lot for power, but the bearings will last longer. As far as the rods go, any time a rod is reconditioned, the bolts have to be with them. Don't stick any rods back in an engine without reconditioning them.
Yea they got the flywheel and the harm balancer, I dont plan on spinning it real fast (6k max) but I thought it might be worth it to get it balanced. maybe a waste of money who knows. And the arp bolts will give me a little peace of mind if nothing else i guess
6K RPM is WAAaay fast for a four inch stroke engine with such a massive crankshaft. You are very wise for balancing this rotating assembly.
Something I failed to comment on in my last post was that although balancing in and of itself does not "create" power, in the case of such a massive rotating assembly it will "free up" a little power.
Well he called me today with the latest update, and talked me into running roller rockers. Its just about done just needs buttoned up and painted. Also told him to put in some hardened pushrods the pushrods sure seem looong and weak to me lol. Also went with the aluminum FordRacing valve covers i didnt think the stock ones were tall enough for the roller rockers.
I sold my little ranger last week and got a 95 F250 Supercab 4x4 460 Auto so I've kinda been forgetting about the old 78 but now I'm getting excited to get this motor in and get it running!!
is my edel #1406 600cfm gonna be enough carb for this engine? I dont want to over carb but i definitely dont want to under carb and not get full potential either.
im running an eddel 650 off road carb and love it. i have to lean it out in the summer, but in winter stock is great.
'71 400 stock bottom end, shaved heads, eddel perf. 400 intake, headman fenderwell exit headers, full msd, crain fireball 2 cam 525 lift 290 duration. lots of fun. at about 35 mph just stomp it and it'll break the rear tires loose 33 bfg mud terr. its great i sand drag race it. its the only super mod truck thats still street able and is driven to the track.
The motor is in and running and it sounds AWESOME no mufflers yet open headers and it set off car alarms idling. Got to get my kickdown for the C6 hooked up and a few other odds and ends then its going to the exhaust shop tomorrow.
Heres a pic of it before i set it in last night and also a close up of the roller rocker arms
Yea, with all the labor on the install all the machine work and all the extras:
autometer gauges, edel #1411 750cfm, ford racing valve covers and ford racing air cleaner (he ordered the matching air cleaner without asking me first but i said ok because it matches the valve covers nicely) and my dual exhaust hooked up to the headers at his buddies muffler shop....
i spent almost 5.5k.
lots of good parts in this motor though, TMI pistons, comp XE262H so I think its a fair price. I think I will be very competitive in the stock class at the mud races come spring
Cool!, In a week ill be testing mine with new stuff in it, im exited to, I thought the engine was expensive, when i got modifiyng the suspention on my mustang for the extra weight, the chasis, the 9" rear body work etc.... boy that took long enough, at last im ready..
Heres some pics it got kinda messy and dirty during the install i have new wires coil cap rotor and fuel filter for it but its to cold to do it right now. air cleaner looks real nice when its clean that picture makes it look like crap. Also love the gauge im glad i decided to put it there. the small gauges are oil press and water temp that pic sucks also................... cheap camera.
