Shotgun question

For those of you who hunt or use one, what would ou recommend for goose hunting? I think I will retire my old Remington as its in like new condition and its classic look will match my Remington 308 that I will also retire. I bought these new when I was very young and Dad had the gun shop go through lots to get me matched wood grain on the stocks.
Probably go 12 gauge, not sure semi/pump, composite stock, brand, etc

I dont goose hunt, my parents do, and they use remington and they love em. Dad has a pump with a wood stock, nice looking and great shooting gun. I dont remember offhand what my mom uses.

Just lately I have been checking out mossburg more and more. The one I was looking at was a composite stock, and a pump action. I think 12 gauge is the way to go.

Im also thinking, open choke, and a long barrel.

Lots of good shotguns out there, but I would defenitley get a semi auto with a wood stock. As for brand, right now I would go with Bennelli and second would be a Wingmaster 12 gauge, 31/2 mag and full choke. I heard that there is a real good Russian brand out there and the price can't be beat but I not actually seen one.

depends on how much you want to spend. 600$ will get you a smoking pump action, don't bother with the 3 1/2 inch, not too many guys ever use them, modified choke... i'm using a winchester Ranger 120, given to me by my dad. its in imaculate condition, 12g, 3 inch, full choke and a 30 inch barrel.

i want to get a synthetic stock/forearm, 3 inch, full choke, 30 inch barrel, pump action to use in the field and keep my dads in pristine condition in the showcase.

personally i'd stay away from the semi autos just for the simplicity of the pump, and a fast, smooth, pump action can almost match the speed of a semi-auto in the field.

benilli and stoeger are both great brands, remmington has great value with the model 870...mossberg maverick takes the value cake with a 199$ sticker!!!

For range you can get a 10 guage but oh are they hard on the body.
I have 2 12 guage Remingtons.

Forgive me for buttin' in on your chapter fellas, but I can't resist when the talk turns to shotguns!

I'm curious - are you required to use a non-lead shot for waterfowling? We are in the States, and the steel shot greatly reduces the effective range of the gun. Hevi-shot and Bismuth are nice, but at $2 + per round it gets spendy, particularly if you shoot as poorly as I do.

Mossberg is good bang for the buck and as was said, you can't go wrong with the good old 870 IMO.

yeah its a steel only shooting here as well Steve. i agree with the range issue. i sort of understand not using lead of the birds are over water, but when they're over field?? heck... i say let them have the lead. i see we can get hevi shot here now, but i think i'll stick to my federals. way cheaper, and i shoot lousy too...

what do you hunt most Steve?

I just went Dove hunting this past weekend for a couple of days . I'll go Quail and Chukar hunting hopefully a couple of times this fall, and maybe a couple of times for Ducks if I'm lucky. Our Duck hunting doesn't compare to what you fellas have up there, but I can usually manage to eke out a couple of birds.

If I ever do get up there I'd sure be pleased to take you up on that kind offer, Sherm. From what I understand the Goose hunting in Sask is just about as good as it gets.
